NaNo Second Week - part nine

Sabine walked out of the her shanty town to the cluttered main highway.  She could have taken motorized transportation to get to Amaranth’s  lab. She actually enjoyed riding the small motorcycle issued to her by the Tower when she was assigned to Leda as midwife.

There was some worry on Amaranth’s part that Sabine would not be assigned to Leda. There were a few other midwives that could have been assigned, and a couple of those woman had some more experience than Sabine with births. And deaths, for that matter. And, in fact, if one of the other women had been assigned, that would have been fine, too.

But, Amaranth wanted Sabine to get the assignment. And Sabine was proud of that fact. Of all the midwives that Amaranth could have chosen to graduate and could have recommended for the job and of all the midwives that Amaranth had trained over the years, she chose Sabine for their mission.

Sabine was proud, but afraid. This is the most crucial birth of the three. When it was decided that three men born of the Wizard would be required to remove him from power, the community became resigned and waited patiently. Now the third boy would need to grow into a fully formed and ready man. Once he was born, of course, which was another hurdle.

The community managed to get one of their own into the genetic pool for conception. There were a few ladies from neighboring communities, a bit farther away than their town to the Tower. But the others were more than happy to step subtlety aside once Leda implied she would like the position. Quite literally the position, for all the magic and alchemy of the Wizards, they still reproduced the old fashioned way. In a way, it was like horse breeding. When a prize stud and mare copulate, there is no question who is the father of the foal. Unconsciously, the Wizards followed that logic. It was unconsciously, because they had long since forgotten, if they ever knew in the first place, that particular bit of animal husbandry.
