I've been thinking about something recently, and as of tonight I've made a decision.

I'm going to go vegan.

Now, it's not because of animal rights (well, in retrospect yes, I think it's much better to not be advocating the harsh treatment of animals), but once again for health reasons. I'm finding out the unhealthy dips in my vegetarian diet which ( Read more... )

I never really understood why people would become vegetarians but then still eat fish... I mean to be fair I never bothered to listen to any answers that were given to me when I asked... but still, I wondered lol

My answer is fairly unique, I think.
When I started as a vegetarian, I did not eat fish for a while (a few months). But my entire family is from Newfoundland, and fish is a big part of my diet, and so while they were visiting my grandmother nearly exploded while trying to cook for me. I love my grandma, and I didn't want to explode, so I ate the fish. Then I decided to keep it for primarily sushi purposes. Also, because my veggie choice was for health reasons, fish is generally (and I use this term very loosely of course) better prepared and healthier than other meats (case in point: sushi) with fewer and better fats.
Ta da! Now you understand why *I* became vegetarian and still ate fish. One down, plenty to go.

I guess my only question is how strict you're going to be about this. I have a vegan friend who can't eat stuff like bagels, muffins, donuts, and bread that isn't specially made for vegans, because of the eggs used to make them. Are you going to watch for that, because it really just sounds like a pain in the ass to me, haha.

...then again, not eating meat is also sort of a pain in the ass for me, so I guess you're already a step ahead, lol.

well I'm certainly going to start off less strict than others. the first step is eliminating things with cheese, milk, eggs, butter etc. in them directly, which is easy enough. there are a ton of regular grocery store breads that are vegan-friendly though. Because it's not for animal rights reasons, it's not the end of the world if I accidentally slip up a time or two.
