I haven't seen this (I remember reading about it when it came out), bc my knee-jerk reaction was basically, "If I see one more movie about "quirky NYC" chicks I'm gonna loose my mind. This sounds very interesting though, I'll have to check it out and report back. :)

Oh, please do! I'd love to hear what you think about it!

I definitely know what you mean about having an allergy to the "quirky NYC chicks" genre...part of what I hate is I think that fantasy that everything is so easy and NY is so creative and romantic and cool. And this movie seems like it's going down that path for the first third of it or so, but I think it really resists it in the end. So I can't wait to hear what you think :)

Will do! (it did get good reviews from the Times, Time Out NY, & NY Mag iirc)

Yeah, I really hate the perpetuation of that stereotype. It is HARD to live in NYC, and you're generally too busy busting your ass, working 2 jobs to make rent on a sh*tty apartment you share with ten other people in "East Williamsburg" (aka Bushwick, except that area is now gentrifying... so Ridgewood, Queens, but you lie and say it's in Brooklyn to sound hip). The number of my friends who have left NYC for other places bc of this reality (most of them artists or writers) is not insignificant, so I get kinda touchy about it. (As you can proabably tell). I love NYC, but I grew up here, my family is here, and I know how hard it can be sometimes, however I find the advantages outweigh the drawbacks BUT I don't think it's the place people imagine it to be. (but I guess that's true of most places.)

Anyhoo, of topic rant over... I'll go check it out!

I had the same reaction on first hearing about this. (Well, intensified, because my first thought was that the main character was Asian American--I've known someone with that name--and I couldn't believe there was a film about a quirky Asian American woman out here.)

But you've made it sound significantly more interesting, V. And it's on Netflix.... M.

Thanks for reminding me of the movie; I wanted to see it when it came out, but it did not happen then. Will try to get my hands on it now; it's been recommended to me pretty strongly before.
