I use a Ficcare hair clip. Other than soft ponytail holders, they're all I wear in my hair. (I don't wear any hair accessory that will break off hairs as I put it in or take it out.) They may seem expensive, but they're finely crafted, quality metal, not plastic. They're gorgeous and elegant. It's really like buying a piece of jewelry. I've never lost a clip. I always keep one in my purse. They work really well and hold all day long. I just twist my hair up and stick in the clip. It looks great, holds all day long, and keeps my hair tidy. My favorite is the Maximas clip (medium size).
when i had 16 more inches of hair than i do now, i often did the bun-with-hairsticks thing. it's cheap (you can use chopsticks or pens/pencils). they have pretty hair sticks at athena and the athena-like-shop next to uptown. and at greetings.
come to think of it, i shouldproably just give you my old hair sticks, as it's not likely i'll be using them anytime soon...
my hair is too fine, so i never really did braids regularly. but, they have several braid books at the library with cool designs and easy-to-follow instructions. (well, relatively easy -- i still needed others' help)
our friend who's worn her hair in braids over her head every day for...8 years, maybe? has this complicated system that involves pliers. and it takes her a good 20 minutes to accomplish.
they're for bending the hair pins into place, but that's about all i know regarding the process other than, "oh, we can leave soon. i just have to braid," means you're in for a long wait.
I think he's too manly for that. Or rather, he had really long hair and never learned to braid it for himself, so I don't think he's going to learn to braid my hair... lol.

Today I managed to wrestle the stuff into a sort of crown braid. Though I'm not convinced of it's structural integrity.

Please include what the pliers are for. Inquiring minds want to know.
