Key had been relaxing and watching television, house scarily quiet on this sunny May afternoon. The weather outside was chilly but inside the dorm Kibum was cozy and warm, socks on his feet, loose sweatpants on his hips and a giant sweater he’d stolen from Minho (and probably wasn’t going to return since the other rapper didn’t wear it, anyway). He was sitting Indian style on the couch, leaning back against the cushions, eyes slightly glazed over as he just generally zoned out.
However, he was startled when a parcel landed in his lap, and he let out a surprised noise as he instantly grappled it to make sure that it didn’t damage his goods. As soon as he lifted the box he arched a brow, seeing the colorful wrapping, and then glanced up to see Jonghyun smiling stupidly at him.
“What the hell is this?” Kibum asked, his voice even and deep as he glanced up at his hyung.
“A birthday present.~” Jonghyun said, sounding satisfied with himself.
Kibum continued to stare evenly. “My birthday isn’t until September.”
“I know,” Jonghyun sat down next to Kibum, a lot closer than necessary.
Kibum shifted, not exactly uncomfortable, since he and Jonghyun had been way closer before. But he studied the box and then glanced up at Jonghyun’s smile once more, before letting out a breath.
“Why are you giving me this now?” he asked, picking up the box a bit and shaking it, not hearing anything rattling around inside. Either it was packed well, or it was clothing. He hated when Jonghyun bought him clothes. He always bought them a bit too small and a bit too… well, it was obvious the older male shopped on the girls’ side of the store for Kibum which was embarrassing and slightly kinky at the same time. But no, really, Kibum hated when Jonghyun bought him clothes. Secretly. Somewhere deep within his heart.
“I wanted to be the first to give it to you,” Jonghyun said, explaining easily.
“Is it something limited edition?” Kibum’s interest was piqued now. If it was something rare then maybe it was a new dish for the kitchen? Maybe even a new teapot, the box looked to be about that size.
“You could say that. It won’t expire or lose its value but it’s really pricey,” Jonghyun said.
Kibum pursed his lips in thought and licked them a few times, fingers hesitating on the tacky, cheesy pink ribbon that Jonghyun would probably tie in his hair or around his neck later because he was dumb like that.
“It even gets more valuable over the years.” Jonghyun sounded like he was thinking, and Kibum glanced up to see the singer tapping his chin in thought. “But I think you’ve ripened it pretty well.”
“If it’s a fruit I’m going to shove it up your-”
“It’s not a fruit,” Jonghyun scrunched his face up and bat at Kibum’s hands, which weren’t moving. “Just open it.”
Rolling his eyes, Kibum untied the ribbon and let it fall into Jonghyun’s lap, and sure enough the older man instantly started playing with it. Kibum ignored him as he followed the seam of the wrapping paper and tore at the tape carefully; to him, unwrapping gifts was an art, and he hated to tear wrapping paper (though he would never admit it was because he was frugal and liked to keep it for re-use). He broke the seams and pulled the wrapping paper off, and Jonghyun was actually almost as good at wrapping things as Kibum was - his tape was neat and clear but pulled off easily without ripping the paper or the tape or even pulling up the surface of the box.
Setting the wrapping paper on the table, he examined the plain white box, and then lifted it again, experimentally. Still no sound from inside. Biting his lower lip, he opened the box and peered inside, and then huffed as he was met with empty space.
“Jonghyun,” he said, moving to turn towards the older man, “I don’t want to be a part of any of your jokes-”
His frustration was cut off as Jonghyun’s lips met his own, soft and supple but slightly chapped against his own smooth lips, and he was of course caught off guard. Their level of skinship was extreme but it never quite tipped over the border, as close as they had been to do so in the past. This was the first time that the blurred lines had been completely smudged, and Kibum couldn’t help but melt into the kiss, any previous frustration gone.
Jonghyun’s lips moved against his own, and his hand came up to touch Kibum’s jaw, fire sparking under his fingertips as Key felt his face heat up. They pulled apart, Jonghyun smiling and Kibum panting slightly, the breath stolen right out of him as his heart pounded, his chest swelled and a fuzzy feeling spread throughout his entire body. The older boy cupped Kibum’s cheek and stroked his thumb over that high, perfect cheekbone and Kibum leaned into it, smiling softly, before he glanced up and noticed that Jonghyun had tied the ribbon into his hair into a sloppy bow.
“Ugh, you idiot,” Kibum said, reaching up to untie the bow, and then start to put it back into Jonghyun’s hair, only neater this time.
“Don’t you want to know what your gift was?” Jonghyun asked, his voice soft, the lower octave shooting through Kibum’s body and making his fingertips tremble, slipping over the ribbon and making the bow uneven.
“It was an empty box, asshole,” Key said, wetting his suddenly dry lips.
His fingers faltered again but Jonghyun’s hands reached up to grasp at his wrists, pulling them away from his hair, holding them between their bodies as those puppy eyes met Kibum’s feline ones, the contrast between the two of them strong and pulling as Jonghyun gave a lopsided grin.
“It was not,” Jonghyun insisted, and Key glanced down at the abandoned, empty box in his lap.
“… You are seriously the biggest retard on the entire planet.” Kibum pulled his hands away, but not before tugging on a lock of Jonghyun’s hair sharply.
“Ow!” The older rubbed his scalp and pouted, and Key almost apologized, before he started to put the lid back on the box. “Wait!” Jonghyun said, reaching out and stopping Kibum from sliding the lid closed. “You can’t close that, it’s out now, it needs to be free.”
Kibum gave Jonghyun the most dumbfounded expression, ever.
But Jonghyun merely smiled easily, his head tilting a bit.
“I gave you my love, Kibum ah.”
Heat crept up Kibum’s neck and he averted his eyes, letting the situation and the words sink in. Love? Jonghyun loved him? Wriggling his nose, Kibum rolled his eyes and smacked the other in the chest with the lid.
“Yah, you cheesy bastard.” Kibum stood and moved to the sliding doors, opening them and going onto the balcony, setting the box on the railing and leaving the lid cracked.
Jonghyun followed, tilting his head. “What are you doing?”
“Putting your love in the sunlight, so it can grow.”
Jonghyun smirked and nudged Kibum in the ribs, “You’re pretty cheesy yourself, Kibum ah.”
Kibum smiled sweetly and punched Jonghyun in the kidney, “No I’m not.~”
The elder wheezed for breath and grabbed his side, nodding his head, pained as Kibum turned on his heel and moved back inside, leaving Jonghyun to stare at the empty box with the cracked lid. He tilted his head and saw something glinting inside of it, reflecting the sunlight. He limped forward and peered into the box, seeing Kibum’s favorite lock and key necklace laying on the bottom, sitting innocently in the chilly, crisp air to collect the suns’ rays.
Smiling to himself, he decided that he gave Kibum a pretty damn good gift.
“Yah, idiot, get inside before you catch a cold!”
And perhaps he received a pretty damn good gift, in return.
