Summary: Jonghyun is a pervert and Eunsook is out of his league. He shouldn’t even try, right?
In his junior year of high school, Jonghyun fell in love. It was the same year that he got his license, a job, and dropped out; it was the same year he let down his mom, it was the same year his father walked out of their house for the last time, and it was the same year that he decided to put the weight of his mom and his sister on his shoulders. It wasn’t all bad though, really - at least he had fallen in love, right?
Only… he was pretty sure he was never going to see Eunsook ever again.
She was a senior and he didn’t have any classes with her to begin with, and since he was well on his way to dropping out, there was no reason for him to even be anywhere near her A+, goddess-like standards. He was pretty sure she didn’t even know he existed. Aside from him getting harassed by teachers for his bleached hair and illegal usage of baseball caps (was it really so bad to just wear them? He had a black cap, it matched his school uniform), there was no reason for Eunsook to even ask him to kindly get out of her way so she could cut in line for lunch.
On his last day of school, Jonghyun decided to go out with a bang. It wasn’t to prove any sort of macho point to his teachers, it wasn’t meant in any way to stress out his mom - there was one specific point to his stunt, and it was to capture the attention of the captain of the Mathletes.

Overnight, Jonghyun had managed to empty out the entire band room and reconstruct it atop the school roof, along with the help of his friends. All of the marching band pit equipment was set up prettily, chairs were arranged in concert formation, stands were upright with music attached to them; students started milling into school and when the band director noticed his room a bit emptier than usual, heads started turning.
Jonghyun stood up on a podium on the roof and raised his conductor’s wand, tapping his stand and clearing his throat.
Various band students had gathered up on the roof, not the entire class since Jonghyun actually wasn’t friends with many of them and this was a huge stunt that they would all surely get punished for, but the ones that had shown up were grinning ear to ear as they lifted their instruments and picked up their mallets, preparing to create their farewell ensemble for Jonghyun.
It was messy, it was anything but professional but they were making music, they were making noise that was at least in tune and Jonghyun just grinned and sang along loudly, their school song echoing as people gathered in front of the school to point up at the roof and exclaim, able to see Jonghyun high on his perch. The song lasted maybe a few minutes before the door to the roof slammed open and the principal barged in, flushed in the face and looking properly scandalized; she grabbed Jonghyun by the collar and he grinned and waved at the band members, all who clapped and jeered for him as he was brought down to the principal’s office and locked inside for the rest of the afternoon.
While he was waiting for his mother to come and pick him up, he heard the sound of foot steps approaching, most likely an office aid with paper work coming by to talk to the secretary. Leaning over a bit to get a better look, Jonghyun scratched one of his nostrils, and then almost fell out of the chair when Eunsook entered the office and set down a manila folder on the secretary’s desk, smiling prettily and starting to chat.
He could feel his heart slow to a stop as he watched Eunsook’s lips move; she never wore lip gloss, she wasn’t really a girly girl, but her lips weren’t chapped so maybe just regular chapstick? Her hair was down today, like it usually was, and it was dyed such a beautiful, warm chocolate color - he had heard her friends talking her into it the other week and though she had looked like Snow White with black hair, she looked just as beautiful with this warm hue.
“Jonghyun!”
He flinched when his mother’s voice reached him, and glanced up to see Eunsook watching him curiously before politely returning to the conversation she was having with the secretary.
“Hey ma,” Jonghyun stood up and shoved one hand in his pocket, gently taking his mother by the elbow with the other. “Let’s just get out of here.”
“Don’t coddle me like I have Alzheimer’s!” she snapped. “You just had to cause a scene didn’t you!”
Jonghyun chuckled awkwardly and tried to shoo his mother out of the office, shooting an apologetic glance towards Eunsook and the secretary, “I just held a free concert ma, it was no big deal.”
“No big deal!? Aish! Your sister doesn’t cause this much trouble! Did you know she passed her history test with a hundred percent today!?”
“Good for her ma,” Jonghyun sighed through his teeth as he and his mom exited the office, a dark cloud hanging over his head as he felt Eunsook’s eyes curiously lingering on his back as he left.
This definitely wasn’t how he wanted to be remembered at his school.
But then again, she had at least noticed him, right? So she knew he existed.
“And there you go spacing out again! Wipe your mouth! Suck in your gut!” Mrs. Kim jabbed him in the ribs with her elbow as they exited the building, Jonghyun sighing and giving the school one last look, seeing Eunsook through the blinds as she organized a filing cabinet, her smile bright and her eyes disappearing with it as she continued chatting with whomever.
Well, he couldn’t say he didn’t try.
