In addition to a general
Fic List. and fandom specific fic lists, I'm also including a list of 10 fics (or verses) that I personally enjoy the most, just for fun (and for those interested in a quick glance at my writing).
Updated for 2013. Some have been removed, some have been added.
1.
Like Crystal // Johnny's & Associates // Gen // R // “I’ll tell the producers that you’re not feeling very well, Nakamaru-kun.” Nakamaru believes that everything will be alright. Maybe everything will be alright. Maybe everything won't. (Warnings: Drug Use) // Originally written for
elizajet at the
je_squickfic exchange.
I am a chemistry major, so I hate drug-fic done wrong. And there are enough drugs in the world that we don't need to be making them up. Like Crystal is how I handled this travesty in fanfiction, by spending hours researching meth, constructing the story in a non-chronological format (the scenes alternate, and actually go both forwards and backwards to the culminating scene), and is as accurate as my research can make it. It's also more polished than most of the stuff I put on the internet, there's a lot of very subtle pacing and continuity and just general writing that I put in (notice the transitions between scenes). While it's most certainly not the piece I like the most, I think it's a representation of some of the finest writing I can do, which is why it goes first.
2.
this is not a love story // BBC!Sherlock // Romance // PG-13 // Sherlock, Moriarty, and the empty space between them. This is the closest they get to love.
This piece was extremely experimental, and it was received well, which is always a plus. This is one of my favorite pieces, and I always consider it one of my triumphs (also, there's a tumblr post reccing it that has over 100 notes and still I get no comments, whut) The reason it isn't first in the list is because I actually don't like a lot of the pacing (the piece was not originally constructed as a two-part story), so it's skewed very heavily towards one voice. If I were to ever re-do it, I would have to balance the voices, probably by actually designing the piece around 2 voices instead of editing it in.
3.
When the Enemy is the Self // DBSK // Angst / Romance // PG-13 / R // Sometimes the pressure is just too much. // (connected one-shots that stand on their own)
WES 'verse is one of my pride and joys. I like it for the way it treated serious issues such as self-mutilation and eating disorders. I like it because I think that I managed to handle complex issues tactfully. I rec it because I think it's a good representation of my style (a lot of contemplation about how people think), and because I like it. This was written fairly early in my fandom career, so there are some pacing errors. Personally the side stories are best, imo.
4.
We'll End it on Our Terms (Hitman!AU) // J&A // U / General // R // Hitman!AU side-story / Before Kiritani Shuuji, there was a boy named Kamenashi Kazuya who liked to play pretend. (Taguchi/Kamenashi)
We'll End it on Our Terms is one of my most recent fanfictions. It's a side-story in an AU I am not too proud of--it was written very quickly--but I am very fond of this side-story. It's slow and subtle, telling a love story without actually saying much. A lot of what's being expressed isn't being said; the story is chronological, but is slow-paced and dreamy in tone while being very practical in language. I rec this mostly because it's recent, but also because this is the type of love story I enjoy reading and writing.
5.
Perfect Everything // DBSK, Tragedy / High School AU (HoMin, JaeHo, JaeChun, JaeMin) // R // Shim Changmin goes to class, not to learn about how cell walls rupture upon being frozen, but to watch Jung Yunho as he diligently takes down notes. He watches and he learns. He learns Jung Yunho until he knows Jung Yunho better than Yunho himself knows Jung Yunho, and then he moves on to everybody else that Jung Yunho knows.
Somehow this has become one of my most popular stories, years after I posted it! It was inspired off of an actual event that took place at my university, but I do find that while my interpretation may be "OOC", I enjoyed my treatment of somebody who basically justifies their actions to the audience, pretty much convincing the audience that they're right. I think it's one of my strongest narrators, and that is why I recommend it. Also, I liked writing Perfect Everything. I found it fairly liberating.
6.
The Spaces Between // DBSK/Tales of Phantasia crossover // (AU) / Drama / Tragedy // PG / PG-13 // Midgard on the eve of war //
The world-building I did for this was intense. It's set during the Midgard war in Tales of Phantasia (Originally an RPG on the Super Nintendo [never ported to the US], now released on GBA and I believe PlayStation, and there's also an OVA). This takes into account both the game and the OVA (I tried to blend them), but the focus is on the lives of DBSK characters as civilians of Midgard. I used what was already in the game with regards to "summoning spirits" and built a religious system around it, resulting in a story about war, death, and religion.
7.
The Adventures of Dr. John H. Watson, State Alchemist // BBC!Sherlock/Full Metal Alchemist crossover // (AU) / Crack // PG // In which Sherlock is a Coat, John is short, and they still haven’t found a philosopher’s stone.
Probably some of the best crack I've ever written. Also, shameless use of canon dialogue.
8.
A Long Way From Home // Angelic Layer // Gen / Angst // G // Tokyo is a long way from Wakayama.
One of my more recent fics, but I like the way I've grown since I've started writing. It's "Angst", which is the genre I first started with when I started writing a lot in middle school, and I think I'll always have that tendency towards that genre. I rec it mostly because it's more recent, and I think that it's a good representation of my writing evolution.
9.
Queen of the Sky // Cpop [Varioua artists, A-mei centric] // AU / Romance (A-mei x Buing Wang) // G // But she is twenty-four now, and she is here, in the city where they made dreams come true through petty manipulation and sheer force of will. She is here, and she opens her mouth to sing, it is as if she is home, among the trees, and effortlessly she reaches up. And does not touch the sky, but rather embraces it wholly. Queen of the Sky, they begin to whisper.
Meta about cpop in fanfiction form? How about yes? I like how I explored A-mei's successes and downfall through a more fairytale/folklore tone, and I think it's a good sign of my different voices. I like the use of "canon" material to build the piece. I like the very slight, not very appropriate or effective political commentary. Mostly I like the fact that it's very meta.
10.
The Question of NOBUTA // Johnny's & Associates / Nobuta wo Produce // AU / Dystopia / Sci-fi// PG-13 / R // “There's supposed to be a rogue program or something,” Ueda explained. He could hear Junno's voice in his ear whispering, NOBUTA; the program's name is NOBUTA.
QoN was my first fic in fandom, though it didn't get published until about a year later. I consider it one of my masterpieces since it takes two canons and blends them in (I do love my crossovers). I like the dystopia, the handling of important issues (see the
Post-Completion Meta) and using the theme of Nobuta wo Produce to construct a crossover dystopia fanfiction.
Bonus:
All About the Arté // Original [Tsuou'verse AU] // AU / Experimental / Gen // PG // Why did you enter the music industry? / For me, it’s always been about the music. About the way it sounds to sing. About the way your body moves to the beat when you dance. Doing this, joining a band, everything that I’ve done… it’s really all about the art. -Lenar, FS Dream
My most intense project in 2012, I wrote and coded this 9000+ word monstrosity in under a week. Written for the September
brigits_flame contest in Week 2, this story is metafiction in its purest form (at least the closest I've gotten to it). All About the Arte is an AU of my original fantasy 'verse, where every character is signed to a major label and is part of a boyband (or girlgroup). Told primarily through forum posts (and those were hell to code), it's a 9000 word metafiction about the entertainment industry--or the fandom, or both!
I like the story. I like the fact it's meta. I like the amount of time that Rei helped put into it. But most of all, I like the story. This is a love story told through the perspective of outsiders, who are given a very limited, packaged view. This is a love story about two people who are not allowed to have feelings. This is a surface story about a very bleak world (as I wrote in side-story
Distance), and it's nothing about the art.
Chemorphesis // Original Graphic Novels / Chemical Education
My research project, and the primary focus of my attentions these days. Chemical education concepts expressed through metaphor and analogy and translated into graphic novels, with accompanying concept explanations. Chemorphesis calls for some of my best story-telling, and I spend far more time on a 1.5 page story for chemorphesis than I do for any one of these fanfics.
