Wish I had seen this sooner. I totally agree with this idea. We as a species seem to be genetically programmed to excahnge knowledge and develop communications networks in the same way beavers are programmed to instinctively build dams. With the advent of the printing press, the Industrial Revolution, the Information Age, etc we continue to make great strides in our collection and transmission of knowledge and information as we become almost like a hive mind. We are still far away from the ultimate consequences of this, but I think we are moving toward something along these lines. Ray Kurzweil talks extensively about this idea in his books on the technological Singularity. Pretty interesting stuff really...

Yeah, too bad Ray is kind of a nutjob. He envisions a merging of bio/mecha that's not going to be possible for centuries.
