rediscovering an old love

So it occurs to me that the Winter Olympics in Vancouver will be starting soon, and I have been curiously unexcited about them, even though (1) they are taking place in one of my favourite cities in the world and (2) hello, they're the Winter Olympics.  And the Winter Olympics invariably remind me of figure skating, a sport with which I was ( Read more... )

Possibly because the men hang around longer? I think that might be it -- ever since Tara Lipinski -- and with the exception of Michelle Kwan and Sasha Cohen -- the US Women's Figure Skating Team has a really high turnover rate.

I think that must be the case! Johnny Weir is still competing, for instance, and I feel like he's been around for ages, whereas I didn't recognise any one of the women who medalled at this year's nationals.

I must admit I don't especially care for Jonny Weir, but this is just magical.

Also, it seems to be a US thing as well -- I just glanced at the Worlds results from last year and recognised a lot of the names from Torino.

Ahaha, yes, somebody posted that on Facebook a few weeks ago, and I just about died after watching it. Also, have you heard that he's the subject of his own reality TV show? *snerk*
