Wow, this was really helpful for me to read. I tend to fall into 'rescuer' pretty easily and then I have a hard time climbing out once I realize that is what is happening. I've learned to watch out for this because the 'victim' will flip you into 'persecutor' the second you stop rescuing (and of course, it's a draining experience that I no longer get anything out of). But I'm still not good at spotting it. What you wrote has given me a clue: look at the patterns of their other relationships.
