Truly was leaning against Stella’s desk as she waited for her friend to get off for lunch. She chewed on her nail distractedly, praying that if Don spotted her he would just keep walking.

"Truly?" fuck, that man needed God’s help.
"Hi," said Truly simply, her heart breaking just a bit more as Don looked hurt when she barely greeted him.
"What are you doing here?" he asked her.

"Stella and I are goin’ to lunch," she said, with a nod of her head, just glancing at him before going back to biting her nail.

"Oh," said Don quietly, Truly looked over at him. "Why’d you ask me to leave-"

"Hey, Truly, you ready?" interrupted Stella walking up behind Don, fiddling with the strap of her purse.

"Yup," said Truly, pushing off Stella’s desk and following her out, leaving Don staring after her. When the two women reached to confinement of the elevator, Truly collapsed at the floor, hugging her knees to her chest at Stella’s feet.

"Truly? Are you okay?" Truly shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks. Her chest was tight and she couldn’t breathe.

"Don’s gonna hate me when this is over," she sobbed. Stella pressed the stop button on the elevator and sat down next to Truly, running her hand up her arm.

"Truly," asked Stella slowly. "We’ve known each other for a few years right?" Truly nodded, still attempting to breath. "I know you’re never intentionally mean (unless it’s aggravated of course), that’s until you break up with someone, which by your definition, means to ignore them entirely," Truly didn’t say anything, so Stella had to ask. "Are you ignoring Flack?"

Truly nodded, her head dropping onto Stella’s shoulder as she cried, covering her face in her hands. "Why?"

"I don’t know!" sobbed Truly. "I don’t ever know these things, they just happen."

"Well, this thing you’re doing with Flack? Make it un-happen," Truly shook her head.

"I can’t, Stella. It doesn’t work like that, I can’t just go back up stairs and tell him: ‘I’m kind of insane, so when I tell you it’s been nice seein’ you, don’t take it personally’."

"Admitting it is the hardest part."

"Stella, I’m not insane!" cried Truly, pulling her head off of Stella’s shoulder and looking her in the eye. "I just, can’t hold onto a relationship. It has nothing to do with Don or my father never being around or mean little boys in grade school who pulled my hair. I can’t stand him!"

"You don’t mean that," said Stella quietly. "You don’t mean that, Truly."

"I do mean it. I can’t stand him and how much he wants me. He doesn’t want me now."

"Yes he does," said Stella, slightly scared of what her friend was saying. "He does want you. I can prove it."

"You go back up there with me and I guarantee you he won’t look at me."

Stella shook her head. "Why do you do this, Truly? Huh? It’s not nice, and he’s just going to end up hating you."

"Hating me and not pining for me. That’s how it has to be."

"It’s not though, Tru," said Stella, reaching up and pressing the start button on the panel. "I don’t want you to end up miserable."

"It’s got to be this way. It’s in my hard drive, babe. There is not cheat code for my love life."

"I’ll find one."

"If you do, then I will personally make it my life’s work to change my ways and apologize to Donnie."

Stella nodded and stood up, pulling Truly with her as the elevator doors opened. She hesitated and turned back to Truly before she got off.

"Donnie?"
