Writing a tale is both much harder and much easier then it seems from the outside. Parts of the story fall into place fully formed, while other parts are only the bare shell of an idea ( Read more... )

Yeah, I'd say if you don't already know then just plow ahead and fix it when you edit. I'm glad there are so many Nano's out there.

Something I've learned from my recent stint of roleplaying-related activities (well, not really the playing but the reading of books because I don't have any time these days to play) is that a lot of the stuff that we think we care about really actually doesn't matter for the story. Get a rough outline of the plot, some primary characters, and then get writing; all that other stuff (setting specifics, tech level, political climate, and so on) will just fill itself in as it is needed. Basically, vomit forth a story that hits all the points that you want it to hit and then go back through doing an epic editing pass and adding all the color and consistency that you need.

As for the character naming thing, I'm a fan of the phone book method (and if you're worried about gender, just make it be a cyberpunk dystopian future and everyone has badass callsigns).
