Ram put the book down on his bed after Java left his room. He kicked himself mentally for letting her leave. Last time she left, she didn't come back until a week later. The front door of the apartment clicked shut ( Read more... )

Ram watched the door nervously, hoping Java would walk in any minute and things would go back to how they were this morning. He chewed on his lip. I could atleast work on my game he thought.
He got up from the couch and picked up the laptop in his room. He returned to his spot on the couch and booted his laptop. He first wanted to check his mail, though, to see if there was anything from Siva and Salene. He heavily doubted it now that they both probably thought he was a liar and up to no good. He sighed and shook his head softly.
Ram was surprised to see a message from Ved. He hadn't talked to Ved since he had asked for help with Bray. He hadn't even seen him at the mall that morning. Ram read it thoroughly then thought about it. He clicked the reply button and began to type his message.

Ved,
Perhaps getting out of the house will do me some good. Java returned this morning and was sleeping in my bed when I came home. I'll meet you in The Casino this evening around dinner time.

Feeling much improved by her walk and the new toy she'd gained from it, Java wasted no time in hesitation as she stood at her husband's doorstep. Not bothering to knock, she opened the front door with a sense of familiarity that verged on the intrusive, flashing a quick, perfect smile at the man on the couch as she pushed the door shut behind her. "Still working hard?" Java moved past him into the kitchen as she spoke, setting the groceries on the counter with a brisk air of efficiency that she hoped disguised her careful avoidance of any sort of meaningful eye contact.

Ram swung his feet off of the coffee table at the sound of the door. He really didn't expect Java back so soon. He was surprised she came back at all from how he had acted earlier this afternoon. He almost knocked his computer off of his lap.

He regained composure and looked over the top of the screen.
"I suppose if you want to call it working." He answered, trying to cover up his clumsiness. He tried to find his place in his coding again, but failed. He sighed, saved, the closed out. The stupid game he was working on was more trouble than it was worth.

He turned of his computer and set it on the coffee table, looking towards the kitchen at Java.

Java systematically searched the cabinets of Ram's kitchen as her husband continued his work, such as it was, and assembled a small collection of cooking paraphernalia on the old countertop. It wasn't like Ram to be so clumsy, she thought, picking up a heavy ceramic bowl. It was almost as if he were hiding something... Not that that was anything new. She measured rice into the bowl and filled it with water, watching the grain swirl in tiny eddies as the water rushed in. The room sounded painfully silent when she turned the tap off again, and Java realized that she could hear her heartbeat, very faintly, in the back of her ears. She set the bowl down into the sink, dipping her hand into the water and carefully washing the starch out of the rice. Regardless of her feelings, she had to say something to him, Java realized; she couldn't just barge in and hide in his kitchen. The water had turned milky-white. Java cradled the rice against one edge of the bowl with one hand, poured the water out, refilled. In the living room, ( ... )
