Wires dangle precariously out of it, bits of metal pieces lie scattered about the desk here and there

You wont find anything remarkable. The circuitry is pretty basic.

It is. One would think that there would be something hidden in the circuitry that would provide useful. Sadly, this is far from the case. When I took mine apart, I was trying to figure out how it knows when to shock its holder.
