I Sacrificed Quality for Brevity, But This Post Is Still Effing Long

I promised it a while ago, but here's the missing piece from my Best Songs of 2008, The Weather Machines' "New Soft Archetype" (Link leading to mp3). I don't feel like designating a set place for it on the list, but it's in there.

And furthering the trend of showing just how arbitrary the arrangement of year-end Best-Of lists, I've seen more movies ( Read more... )

Considering how many categories there are to discuss, this post is remarkably succinct.

One question: you really weren't impressed with Meryl Streep in Doubt? You're the first person I've met who saw it and didn't absolutely rave about her.

Don't get me wrong, she was quite good in Doubt, but she also has the misfortune of ultimately being compared to other better Meryl Streep performances, and there was a moment of overacting at the end that really hurt the movie for me. They're both kind of petty reasons, and based on everything else I've seen, she deserves a nomination, but it's not a performance I can point to as an example of acting greatness.

This post comes as a real kick in the balls to me as I have seen NONE, I say, NONE of the movies mentioned.

That feels like it could be a burn. Damnable text's lack of expressiveness.

Not meant as a burn, just a statement of fact.

Apparently Braxton Knopp (as well as our friend Justin who I saw it with) liked Benjamin Button. Bernadelli did too.

Who is this Bernadelli you speak of?

James Bernadelli, who runs reelviews.net.

Dude, it's Berardinelli. Get yer facts straight, man. (Actually, I had always thought it was Bernadelli too, and was pretty sure that's who you were getting at, but when I checked his review, I noticed the name difference and it totally threw me off. I also thought maybe you were talking about UR film professor Bernardi, or perhaps some sort of cinematically all-knowing offspring of the two.)

It worries me a little bit that Forgetting Sarah Marshall is higher on the list than Pineapple Express.

But maybe I just like potheads too much.

And maybe I have a deep-seated fear of the sound a dick would make flopping against a guy's legs as he wobbles it around.

...

Em and I tried to watch Wall-E last night but the DVD hadn't been burned properly. I thought I was going to cry. It really is a terrific love story.

Let me know if you want to hang out sometime.

I wavered back and forth between them, since they both provided equal laughs for me. In terms of quality of filmmaking, Pineapple Express was better, but Forgetting Sarah Marshall won out for completely selfish and unrelated-to-film-quality reasons, namely that I saw it in theaters twice and it only cost me a total of 50 cents, while the Forgetting Sarah Marshall poster parody idea got me $100 from MAD, so the very existence of that film scored me a profit of $99.50. And many laughs.

I would love to hang out sometime. I have a bit too much on my plate right now, but when things clear up, I'll give you a call.
