Character Name: MakubeX
Series: GetBackers
Gender: Male
Age: 14
Species: Virtual reality (appears human)
Appearance: MakubeX technically doesn't exist, but it is nigh impossible to tell just by looking at him. He appears as a normal human being. He is a bit on the short side and has short silver hair with longer bangs that hang long. He has greenish-blue eyes and almost always wears a long scarf around his head and a dolphin pendant. Usually he dresses in cooler, darker colors, typically purples and blues.
Personality: Basically, MakubeX is a teenager who was forced to grow up too fast. As a child, he was cheerful and carefree. Details will be in the history section, but MakubeX ended up as the ruler of a troubled town. The stress from this caused him to go mad, and, for a time, he was more cold and calculating. Once he was brought back to his senses, he regained some of his old personality. He smiles more easily now, but his madness did leave its scars and he is still prone to bouts of melancholy or outright depression.
MakubeX is a brilliant teen prodigy, particularly when it comes to computers. Due to this, he sometimes comes across as a know-it-all brat, but usually means well. MakubeX takes his leadership duties very seriously, which is part of what led to his breakdown. He is willing to sacrifice himself or his own well-being for his friends and his people. His friends mean the world to him and his greatest fear is losing them.
As mentioned, MakubeX is very good with computers and can do just about anything with them. He can make flawless virtual worlds or control people through his wire doll system. By extension, he also excels at video games. He plans and thinks before he acts, calculating out the best course of action.
On the down side, MakubeX has something of a complex about being abandoned. He has a recurring nightmare in which everyone he cares about leaves him, one by one, until he’s standing alone in a barren wasteland. This dream occasionally returns to haunt him.
MakubeX isn’t much of a fighter, but he can take care of himself. He prefers to have others fight for him or rely on trickery than get involved in a fight. He is more agile than strong.
While it was initially a shock, MakubeX is okay with his identity as a virtual program. He is unable to leave his home, the Infinity Fortress, in canon. He does have an interest in the outside world, although he is unable to experience it for himself.
History: (Sorry this is long, but it’s important to his personality.)
MakubeX was born in Lower Town, the lowest level of Mugenjou (aka Infinity Fortress). He was raised by a pharmacist named Gen, who had found the boy as a baby, abandoned in a bag on the street. The name “Makube” was written on the bag. Gen raised the boy as his own, and after some time, an “X” was added to Makube’s name to represent the unknown. Gen introduced him to computers and, eventually, MakubeX learned even more on his own.
Eventually, MakubeX left Gen to join the VOLTS, a gang formed by Ginji Amano, the Lightning Emperor, to protect Lower Town from the upper levels. He rose up in the ranks, becoming one of the Four Kings who served directly under Ginji. Eventually, Ginji left Infinity Fortress and the other Kings soon followed, making MakubeX leader by default. It wasn’t long before the peace the VOLTS had established shattered and powerful residents from the middle layer of Mugenjou, the Beltline, began to attack constantly. To stabilize things, MakubeX hardened his heart and made himself appear as a tyrant to keep things under control.
At some point in time, MakubeX hacked into what is known as the Archive. The Archive is used by the “gods” of Babylon City, the topmost layer of Mugenjou, to control what happens in the floors below. As it turns out, much of Mugenjou is virtual reality, including a number of its residents, intended to be used for experimentation. Makubex discovered that only one thing could change the prophecies set by the gods: the presence of Ginji, the Lightning Emperor. The Lightning Emperor’s existence was never a part of the Archive and, thus, alters all of its prophecies.
Realizing this, MakubeX devised a plan to return Ginji to Infinity Fortress and force the gods to return everything back to the era of the VOLTS. His bargaining chip would be an atomic bomb, intending to destroy the fortress if the gods refused.
Long story short, he succeeded in getting Ginji, who has since joined a recovery service with a man named Ban Midou, and two of the other Kings to return to Lower Town, using a stolen part required for his bomb as bait. However, he is outwitted just before he makes his challenge to the gods of Babylon City. Ban uses his special ability to give MakubeX a vision, which causes him to realize that he is really just lonely and wanted to be with his friends again.
Admitting his defeat, MakubeX flees and attempts suicide, hoping to find out if he is real or not. Ginji ends up saving him and MakubeX realizes that he isn’t really alone. Ginji then officially recognizes MakubeX as his successor as leader. MakubeX then vows to bring and keep peace and keep his people safe through trust and without the use of fear.
He now works on his vow, working with the remaining members of the VOLTS. He also keeps an eye on his friends living outside of Mugenjou and assists when he can. He will also work to break Babylon City’s control over the lower levels, but I will be taking him from a point before he makes an attempt.
Extra notes: He does end up with some insanely powerful abilities late in the manga, but they won’t be showing themselves here. Also, his computer skills will be scaled back in such a way that he’ll find he just can’t mess with much on the SOL, even if he’s doing everything he should. Save approved plots/rule of funny, of course.
Cambot post sample:
[MakubeX steps away from Cambot, grinning.] There we are. I think I’ve managed to figure you out. Brilliant device you are. Crude, but inventive. Luckily for me, that made it easy to figure out your hardware.
[He takes a seat, wiggling his fingers over a keyboard.] Let’s give this a test run, shall we? First, look up.
[MakubeX types, Cambot obeys! MakubeX types some more.] Perfect! Now… Display my name on the screen and play a fanfare.
[Cambot obeys again!] Excellent. Now let’s try…
[MakubeX frowns and types something. And… Cambot does nothing.]
You were just faking, weren’t you?
[Cambot nods as sheepishly as a camera is able.]
[Sigh.] Well, then, back to the drawing board…
Third-person log sample:
It was obvious MakubeX was no longer in Lower Town. This place was like nothing he’d ever seen before. It didn’t seem likely that he had been abducted and taken to the Beltline.
“Babylon City, then?” he wondered aloud. No, that was also unlikely. The door was open for one thing. The gods of Babylon city wouldn’t be so careless. Also, why take him hostage? If they knew of his plans, wouldn’t it be best to simply kill him?
Well, MakubeX certainly wasn’t going to stand around and wait for his captor to return. If he could locate a computer, he could send a distress signal to Sakura, who would organize a search party. The problem was finding a computer. He checked a number of floors, each more useless than the last.
Eventually, MakubeX came across a window. It appeared to be nighttime, but perhaps he could spot a landmark. He stepped up to it, looking down.
“This must be rather high up…” he mused, getting up on his toes. Finally, he got a glimpse of land… and the entire planet below him.
“An illusion?” he wondered. Well, that was a relief. He could break a virtual illusion easily. It was just like one of his virtual environments, after all. There was no doubt in MakubeX’s mind that this was fake, so he knew that he could just walk right through this fake wall and find a real exit. However…
…he smacked face-first into the window.
MakubeX stumbled back, eyes wide. He muttered to himself, “No, that’s not possible. There’s no way. No logical way…” He leaned against the wall, running numbers and scenarios, each making less and less sense.
“What is going on?”
Riff sample:
Irene signaled for a latte with one hand and fingered her long blonde hair with the other twisting it again and again until it spiraled like a golden staircase leading to the top of her head. When the pain started, she wept, expostulating
MakubeX: Gesundheit.
"I don't know what I'll do without Henry. He was the center of the world."
MakubeX: [Sigh.] I suppose making a lovemaking/earth moving/shaking comment would be far too obvious here…
"Even the center of the world has to die sometime." Margaret sat sideways in her chair, her breasts a pair of protruding Alps.
Makubex: Topped with snow and occupied by a young girl and her grandfather.
"He didn't seem like the kind of man who died," Irene said. "Sometimes, when were in bed, making love, at the very edge of the surf where the waves washed over us again and again,
Makubex: Probably should have had your waterbed patched…
I looked at his face and saw something there that not even all the forces of erosion could ever wash away. He was a determined man, and in his position he had to be: and I knew that, too, looking up at him wanting only for him to be there forever. He was old, you know: he was around in the seventies and everything. But there was an agelessness to him, a beautiful eternal foreverness that shone from him like the light from a lighthouse, or like the sunlight from the sun.
MakubeX: [Holds up a finger, opens his mouth, shakes his head and closes it again.] Ah… No, I’m not stooping to making sparkling vampire jokes.
He made me feel like a child again,
MakubeX: His Pedobear fursuit probably had something to do with that.
and I wanted to stay in bed with him, feeling him warm my world, cooled by the waves that washed over us, until the stars went out.
MakubeX: [As Margaret] Wow, TMI much, Irene?
That what I expected anyway. That's what he promised. And now he's dead. His heart's stopped."
MakubeX: Yes, that generally tends to happen when one dies…
