It bothers me more when, say, Guitarist from Band X decides to have a project on the side, and people call it a solo project, when it's really just him with a different bassist, drummer, and singer. May as well be a different band, but no, it's a "solo project". Utterly illogical.
Technically, most people in rock bands are soloists anyway, unless there are two of their instrument in the band. Things get marked as solos in music when you're the only one of your instrument playing at a given point in time...a case which applies more often than not to everyone in a rock band, except perhaps the guitars, which there are sometimes two of.
