While I really like the detail you get with the close-up, I'm actually partial to the far away shot.

It just gives this chilling, desolate feeling. The branch just seems to be a noted subject in itself, especially with its bent position and visible thorns. I don't think it would be as riveting if it were just a straight branch. Yes, the bend definitely adds character.
