We keep hearing about competition between google and microsoft. What if ... google starts funding open source OS or comes up with it own OS?
A launch of gmail increased all mailbox sizes, I wounder what will happen to OS and in particular windows! No matter what happens I am sure users will be winners.

I am not sure how much of a foothold a Google OS can create for itself. As long as they are unable to convince the big players in the PC industry (read Dell, HP) to preload their OS on their machines, they are going to be just another fringe OS like Linux.

Isnt "Software as a service" a complete deviation from the traditional OS model? Check out yesterday's news of the M$ reorg where they got the windows, office and MSN divisions (previously 3 independant groups) under a single group ... looks to me like if anyone can begin giving out sofware as a service, then M$ would be best placed to do that. At last count they had close to 2200 product variants. Imagine the scope of making it available via web services through MSN ... What does Google have? Gmail (i am betting that Yahoo! Mail is going to beat the pants off Gmail very soon), GSearch and some other fringe items.

Currently google is no where near M$ in terms of products and services they offer ... but the rumor is that "google is working on OS and other services". I was just wondering what would happen when google releases them (if they are working on it!)?
I never said gmail is the best ... but remember the mailbox size limit before gmail, even yahoo offered just 100MB!
Can something similar happen in OS world?

Sure anything can happen. Lets ideate for a while. What can be so remarkably different in OS? For me, the thought that different components of the OS can be broken up and provided as a hosted service, so that the terminal used to access the internet is a "dumb" terminal ...this thought is a remarkable step forward. This needs the demarcation of core OS features and the add-ons ( ... )
