I've approved of almost everything else the Obama administration has done so far, but they're a true disappointment to conservationists at this point.
The Interior Secretary is planning to take the gray wolf off the endangered species list, which doesn't sound so terrible, except that eager state officials are planning wolf hunts right now. Scientists and conservationists say that the wolf numbers are not recovered enough to withstand the assault planned. Furthermore, there is no good reason for it: statistics published the other day in the NY Times showed that wolves are responsible for only a very small percentage of livestock loss, and ranchers are entitled to compensation when it does occur. Mostly, the hunts are going to be a show of bravado and pandering. They are certainly not the result of careful wildlife management. Go here for more info and to help stop this nonsense:
