Ooh, my first instinct was elaborate spring-loaded mechanism, but magnet sounds a lot more plausible :D

Examine your other cupboards and see how they work? I think mine here have some kind of fancy hinges, and if the screws are loose (or off) they make all sorts of noise and jerk around and don't shut properly.

See if you've got a small pin or metal wedge on the door and a slot or two small rollers close together in the cupboard. Sometimes doors push shut by having the wedge roll between the two rollers, holding it in by friction. These are usually on doors that push shut. One of the two bits might have popped off, and they'd make a metallic sound.
