Chapter 026

Nov 20, 2009 19:10

After being in Mayfield for a few months, I have noticed something strange. I was told at home that having shrines and temples was a normal part of every city. But I have not found either one here...

Why?

There is a church here. Are you looking for a place of worship?

From what I have learned in school, a church is a place of worship for the Christian religions. A shrine or temple are Shinto or Buddhist. They are different in many ways from each other. I find it strange that neither of the religions are common here.

Shintoism and Buddhism weren't common in 1950's America, either, I believe. This country was founded by Christians.

I understand. Was Christianity the only common religion of the time?

This is far from a normal town.

I was led to believe that the model was of an average 1950s American town.

Yes. The average 1950s town had very few Japanese residents.

... My information was flawed. I will have to re-think my views.

[OHEY DAUGHTER]

Shrines and temples are not common place in a 1950's American setting.

[OHAI DAD]

That would explain it. [maybe sounding a little disappointed]

I'm afraid I don't really know much about that... shrines weren't all that common where I come from. There was just the Hakurei Shrine and the Moriya Shrine... at least, that's all I knew of, anyway.

Where I am from there is a place called the Naganaki Shrine. We visited it for several festivals... I have many fond memories of it.

I wish I could say I had fond memories of the Hakurei shrine banquet...

... especially considering the rabbit stew... a-at least I got them to add chicken stew, b-but still...

....it's pretty common in Japan if that's what you're asking.

With the amount of Japanese citizens in Mayfield, I am surprised there is not one here.

This city never seemed to care about Japan before so why should it start?

I wonder why a large number of us are Japanese, then...
