Loyalty

Dean knew about loyalty. The kind you swore to, the misplaced kind and the kind blindly given. He had an abundance of it. Too much he sometimes thought, since all it got him was slammed doors, raised voices and waking alone. He also understood the danger of divided loyalties. There were days, before Sam went to college and after he dragged him back, that he felt as if he was being torn apart. Like those guys from Europe and the Old West who were ripped apart by the horses tied to their arms and legs.

Sam always accused him of following their father blindly, but hell, what could he do? Their dad was the only one who had yet to abandon him completely. He may have disappeared, cut off contact, but he never acted as if Dean didn't exist.

Dean knew about loyalty. He knew how to give it, how to swear it and understood that he sometimes gave it to the wrong person. He also knew what it was like to get none in return.
