WHetehr it was a rhetorical question or not, I do believe the current psychobabble answer is that it takes roughly half of the time you were with someone to get over them. So, with someone for a decade? It'll take 5 years to shake them completely out of your system. Of course, if you were already getting rid of them from your brain and your heart for the last three of that decade, you only get a couple more years of heartache.
