Cost of flying in Indonesia

One thing that struck me about Indonesia is how cheap flying is here. I've flown about 10 times in the last 10 days - the average flight is about 1.5-2 hours. Here is an example of a flight I just took today - Jakarta - Bali (1.5 hours, ~ 1,000 km):

Not the best timing for this praise of the Indonesian air industry, given the latest news...

True, but then again it's not like I praised their safety record (which I simply don't know the figures for - which would be accident rate per million takeoffs).

On the other hand, when the pilot we met told us that he had two whole years of flight school in Indonesia before flying the plane, it did sound a bit spooky.

You can fly in europe for $50/hour of flight time. I did it twice in July.

1. EU lowcoster pricing is very variable. Ie you can indeed fly very cheaply but it's not consistent. Here you can reasonably expect to buy a ticket a day before at this price level (and have wide selection of flight times - not 6am only).

2. Some lowcosters fuck you with fees - so you have to be on your guard all the time against them (which I hate)

3. That said EU safety record is much better - that's something they do have to improve on.

Dude. The worst domestic safety record possibily outside some African countries is the price of such encouragement. You'd rather pay more, trust me.
One day ask me about my experience staying overnight in a boarding house provided by an Indonesian airline for a connection they missed, and about my experience returning from Burma to Bangkok on AirAsia nearly under civil arrest. Consider yourself lucky you MERELY paid little.

Many other countries have much more expensive airfare and higher crash stats. I'd like to think that cheap and safe airfare is possible.
