History:
The city was Midgar and though the date is unknown to all those outside of the family and a select few individuals, Rufus ShinRa was born one evening, just after dusk, to the president of the major power company of the world and his little known of wife. Right off the bat the young ShinRa was thrust into a fast paced life, filled with everything from private tutors to self-defense lessons. From the time little Rufus was able to walk, he was being taken around to the different locations that the Shin-Ra Company found a foot hold in the world. Being the only (legitimate) son of the president, it fell onto the toddler to one day take up the position of president once his father passed on or resigned, hence his intense training and education of all things business, money, power and electricity. It would be noted by many in the close circled of trusted people that President ShinRa never treated his son like he was a child and that he always seemed to treat him as a business tool or when it involved his neglected wife, bargaining chip.

By the time that little Rufus ShinRa turned seven he was already being shuttled around the company by his father to act as a tiny ambassador to the small, surrounding areas of Midgar the company was interested in taking for their own. One could imagine the look on citizens' faces as this small, blond haired, blue eyed boy in a white suit would approach them, requesting a moment of their time to talk over the pros of ShinRa digging its claws into the land. Of course, he would never do all the important conversing, he was merely there as an attempt to win over the hearts of the citizens, to ease their minds and to make his father look all the more important. 'Well, if his son is so learned and can only speak the praises of his father and the company... Why should we worry?' It was that very mentality that would ultimately prove the people's downfall as they allowed Shin-Ra to slowly infest their everyday with promises of good will, warm homes and all the latest technology.

At the age of thirteen, just the time when most boys start coming into the throws of adolescence, Rufus was named Vice President of the company, moved from Midgar to a town named Juron and almost weekly, sent on jobs to investigate potential sites for Shin-Ra to build their next reactor. The way that the company would obtain its energy to sell off to the people was to harvest the world's actual life energy to fuel, slowly and agonizing the world into a slow death while weakening it. The company was in no way informed on their actions, not that would have stopped President ShinRa from doing what he was doing. He wasn't about to throw away all his 'hard earned' money after all. And thus, Rufus' job as the Vice President began, much to the vast objections of the board, employees and some citizens.

His first order of business was to become the all important head of the Turks, taking the job away from a board member, Heidegger, much to the older man's disdain. While Heidegger remained the figure head of the department that over saw the group, Rufus was the one pulling all the strings, controlling the groups missions and everything else involving the Turks. While taking charge of the group, Rufus began his quest to rid himself and the world of his father. He started out, giving tips and supplying the 'terrorist' group AVALANCHE with certain means that would help bring about the end to his father, though they never succeeded in taking out the president, as the Turks were always there to stop them before advanced action had taken place.

With tensions between AVALANCHE and Shin-Ra mounting, Rufus was sent on a trip to a spot near Gaea's Cliff with a SOLIDER First Class for protection. The fourteen year old's job was to see if there would be a good spot for a new reactor as well as gauge people's reactions to news of a new reactor near their homes. During the last night in the location the SOLIDER was to carry out his secret mission from the president of the company; assassinate Rufus ShinRa and blame the incident on a disgruntled towns person. At the last minute the older man had a change of heart, though said change happened as his sword had slid across the teen's neck. With blood everywhere the SOLIDER held Rufus in his arms, trying his hardest to heal the vice president, using potions and Curaga and while the wound had closed up, the teen was resting on the edge of consciousness, too much blood lost for the magic to affect. Looking up at the man who had just tried to kill him, Rufus' eyes were unusually dark with pain, sadness and betrayal. He had considered the SOLIDER his friend, one of the few men who actually had made it that far in the young ShinRa's life and after that incident, no other person would ever be so close. From that day forward, Rufus always wore a turtleneck, and most recently the bandages, to hide the permanent mark of his former friend's betrayal, never wanting the world to see what had finally caused the young man to officially lock his emotions away.

After the incident with the SOLIDER, Rufus worked even harder at trying, someway, anyway, to get his father removed from his position, convinced it was the old man who had ordered his son's murder. Little did he know his assumptions were correct. From the age of fourteen to nineteen, Rufus was an anonymous informant for AVALANCHE, wanting them to wipe out his father, so he would not get his own hands dirty as well as keep other people out of the internal conflict. His treachery was eventually discovered and Rufus was locked away in the Turk's headquarters for three years, employees of the company given the excuse that the vice president was on an extended business trip. Being confined to the Turk's headquarters was a blessing in disguise for both Rufus and the Turks, he became acquainted with the more skilled members and was the single reason they had not been eliminated by the president. As it turned out, the president had never liked the Turks and had been planning to have the group wiped out once and for all, taking them all out at the same time while they were home in their headquarters between missions. Since Rufus had been locked in that very building, those plans were quickly trashed.

The Turks saved and respect shared on both ends, Rufus and the group became rather close, reaching an understanding that had the Turks now becoming Rufus' personal guard and trusted associates. With the Turks on his side and his luck moving to his direction, Rufus would soon be thrilled to learn of some normally horrible news. After his three years held up in the Turks' headquarters, Rufus received a phone call, informing him of trouble back home in Midgar. He hopped on a helicopter with Reno, Rude, Tseng and Elena and headed back home from Juron, nervous and excited at the same time to find out what was going on. Seconds after landing a frantic official was rushing out to the blond, terror clearly etched over his aged features; the president was dead as well as half the staff in the Shin-Ra building. The culprit? Sephiroth.

Now president of the company he had longed to run since he was old enough to

Personality:

Cold
Growing up an only child, ignored by his father and rather motherless, Rufus grew to be very cold towards people and the world around him, never letting anything visibly hurt him. When his father was murdered two months before the heartless attacks, Rufus took his place as president of the company, never shedding a tear, not a sorrowful word fell from his lips, just a speech devoid of anything but ice and malice. He had been raised and really, more like trained as if he were to be a power hungry, money starved robot, bent on power, domination and owning the world. A poor child with no childhood or love to fill the icy void in his life.

Calculating
Every move that Rufus ShinRa is always carefully planned out, be it where he spends his time in the day or his next move against an enemy. Nothing goes without though. When he had been only fifteen, he was already planning his father assassination, his own people not even having any sort of clue as to the young heir's plans. When his company was hit by terrorists, Rufus barely needed to lift a finger to have half of the opposing forced wiped out, having had over a dozen plans already laid out as to how the group would be eliminated and even reasons to give to the press as to why so many citizens had lost their lives in a town near one of the company reactors. Everything that goes on in the man's head has a reason and a way, even dozens of options to follow if any sort of 'snag' falls his way. Though, 'snags' rarely seem to happen if ever, they're always taken out before hand, lest they before a problem later.

Guarded
Years of being around treacherous employees, back-stabbing board members or even his own father caused Rufus to never let his protective barrier down except for a few select people. He rarely trusts anyone other than his Turks, unless the person has proven their-self to be a worthy ally, but even then it's almost impossible to wedge your way into a part of the man's life to get anywhere even in something as simple as a conversation. Few know of the plans he makes until the very last moment, a secret fear of getting, as some say, screwed in the end. The last time Rufus had fully trusted someone he ended up with the scar on his neck and a lifetime of watching his back, covering his track and skepticism.

Demanding
Being the president of the only power company in a world complete with its own army and space program (though that was a major failure) would cause one to become demanding. In Rufus' case his demanding started out very young, crying for attention and food as an infant up through adulthood where his demands grew more about things getting done and things to be 'taken care of', he still demands attention from time to time however, an underlying repression from childhood. One does not want to hinder Rufus from getting what he wants or they will become one of those problems on the list of things to be taken care of. If the president wants a candy bar... He will have his candy bar or heaven be damned.

Spoiled
With maids, cooks, butlers and drivers bending to your will at every beck and call, one would grow to become a bit spoiled. Rufus ShinRa is no exception to this little rule of spoiled upbringing. He always had the money and means to get his way, making for a spoiled, albeit unloved, child. Spoiled though to Rufus is like a dirty word, he prefers to call himself 'financially and emotionally motivated', but at the same time he is very much aware that he is a spoiled and he is very much able to use this bit of self knowledge to his advantage. Being spoiled by the house workers allowed Rufus to obtain the skills he still uses to this day when it comes to his manipulation ability.

Oppressive
"...I'll let you hear my new appointment speech. Old man tried to control the world with money. It seems to have been working. The population thought that Shin-Ra would protect them. Work at Shin-Ra, get your pay. If a terrorist attacks, the Shin-Ra will help you. It looks perfect on the outside. But I do things differently. I control the world with fear. It takes too much to do it like my old man. A little fear will control the minds of common people. There's no reason to waste money on them."  -- Rufus ShinRa's speech upon taking over his father's company.

If one see those words, spoken directly from Rufus and cannot find in them how the man is oppressive then they apparently have no sense of the word oppression. It was the younger ShinRa's way of running things that made him so different from his father, at least while he held the position of president there were no false promises. The man used his electric company's army to its full advantage, quickly silencing anyone who dared speak out about the way Shin-Ra was being run or gathering its power to supply the world. He would do anything to get opponents to shut it, but never through monetary means, because all those years his father did that, money was simply wasted and why waste money on the common people?

Manipulating
Ever know someone who could say that one word or make that little face that would get you to do something you would have never normally done otherwise? Well, Rufus has always been that person. If you were to look back in Rufus' twenty-three year history, you'd notice that by the time he was three he had already managed to become a master manipulator, always saying that one thing to get someone to 'change' their minor he would have a slight change in his face to make it look as if the decision was upsetting him in someway and instantly, the decision was over turned with the slight bit of false puppy eyes. Since growing older, Rufus has moved away from the face making and turned more to word usage but still will pull one of his old faces once and a while if even his words fail to sway his intended pray. It's best to be blind and deaf around the blond, then you need not worry about falling victim to his words and ways.

Hidden
Rufus has plenty to hide. His past, his injuries, involvement with the destruction of his world and his own, personal feelings. From a very early age, Rufus was told to never show a kindness to anyone or anything, though if anyone were to see him with Dark Nation they'd realize he really isn't a wall of stone and ice but few have ever seen that side of him. He only talks of his feelings, pain and wish for forgiveness with Tseng, Rude and Reno, his three most trusted and closest allies, though Tseng hears almost twice what the other two do. One would say he wears as many layers as he does to hide the many layers of sin and destruction on him, his outer way of presenting himself the final little wall between he and the unforgiving and hard reality that he faces daily.
