Google buys SketchUp

So I'm a little behind in my web culture, and just downloaded Google Earth for the Mac. Sweet. GIS finally has a GUI. Almost as cool as the first day I saw a web page from Eastern Europe, back in the day. I get the feeling that the Googledudes are so rich they just buy up whatever tech they think is cool, like SketchUp. I haven't spent enough time ( Read more... )

..downloaded Google Earth?! I guess that explains the bare sniff I received when I sent you the outre cool Google Earth screenshot of the Vivasinatra ancestral homeland in Colorado.

Google Earth is da bomb. There are all sorts of interesting things one can do with it beside locating one's home as seen from space. Like locating one's parent's home from space. Or one's childhood home from space. Or looking at Civil War battlefields from space. Or looking at the 1969 Sino-Soviet battle on the Ussuri River from various angles and altitudes from space. Or lamenting the melting polar ice caps from space. Or figuring out if your friend's grandfather was buried in Rozana, Poland, or Ruzhany, Belarus. Or finding the house you rented two years ago at the beach in the Outer Banks.

Literally a million and one uses...
