Went and saw Harry Potter last night.
Ok, first off, the visual effects were excellent and there are some really great performances. I'm not even going to go into all the really obvious slash bits, but Remus/Sirius folks will be pleased...as well as *shudder* Snarry...
"I will attempt to penetrate your mind."
"We've been at this for hours."
yeah, ok.
back to the movie!
Because there was so much ground to cover, the plot suffered a bit and became the Daniel Radcliffe show with cameos by your favorite characters. They focused so much on Umbridge (who was perfect), and Harry, but the rest of it went whizzing by and you barely had time to process it. The wizard's duel in the Ministry of Magic was spectacular. See it on the big screen if only for that.
The music was ok, but it really seemed limpid compared to John Williams' stuff in the first three films (especially PoA).
Luna Lovegood was utterly amazing. I wished i could have seen more of her. She was so adorable and cute and you just wanted to leap into the movie and hug her. Tonks was another one. Though you only saw her briefly, I loved her character and loved how they cast her. I wish i could have seen more of her, too.
Puppy was wonderful as always with his knowing smile and copious raven locks. A bit over the top, but super romanticized is what Gary Oldman does best so it worked. I kept expecting him to dash through the English countryside, robbing carriages and winning the heart of Remus! Bess, the landlord's daughter (the landlord's black-eyed daughter).
anyway,
The fifth book wasn't the strongest of the series, so the movie had to really pick and choose and for the most part they did a good job. Re: the Thestrals, though. They made this big deal about how Hermione and all them couldn't see them and didn't believe they were there...and then they're all flying them in the end, right as rain...
I'll have to re-read the book...
All in all, visually incredible, fantastic acting (that run of Eqqus, really helped Daniel's acting), great sets and a lovely overall feel, but a rather rushed plot.
