Looking At Landmarks

Dec 30, 2012 22:21

So today was sunny and nice, and we went out to look at landmarks.
First we visited the Tour Eiffel, up close and personal this time.

This is an aerial view, which we did not get; we kept our feet firmly on the ground, just like la Tour.  To my surprise, it's beautiful; lots of decorative scrollwork and a generally lacy effect.

After we were thoroughly dizzy, we went to see the Arc de Triomphe at the Place Carrousel, which is across the courtyard from the Louvre and I.M. Pei's famous pyramid.

This is the arch, with Peace riding triumphant in a chariot on top:

There's a woman standing inside the smaller left hand arch, which shows you the scale.

Then we went to the famous Arc de Triomphe at Place Etiole... you know, this one:

The cars give you some idea of the scale, on this one, and some people just inside the central arch, on the right, at the base.

Then we went back to La Defense, and looked again at La Grande Arche de la Defense.  You may not know it; it was erected in 1989.

It looks like this:

All those little smutches on the bottom section of the square?  Those are people on the steps of the pedestal.

I got curious about the scale, so I drew up a little graphic for my own amusement.  Here it is:

(The photo of la tour Eiffel is from the official website.  The arches are from Wikimedia commons.)

And that's what I did today.

paris!
