HEALTH - TRIMESTER 1 REVIEW

FREE FLOATING ANGER - the frustration and hostility that sometimes result when people feel unable to improve their lives

ASSAILANT - a person who physically attacks another person

VICTIM - one who is attacked and harmed physically by another

HOMICIDE - the intentional killing of one person by another

DISCRIMINATION - the mistreatment of a person or group based on prejudices

INTOLERANCE - a lack of acceptance of another’s opinions, beliefs, or actions

MENTAL DISORDER - an illness that affects the mind and prevents a person from being productive, adjusting to life situations, or getting along with others

FUNCTIONAL DISORDER - a mental disorder that cannot be traced to a physical cause

ORGANIC DISORDER - a mental disorder with a physical cause

ANOREXIA NERVOSA - a serious eating disorder in which a person refuses to eat enough food to maintain normal body weight

BULIMIA - a serious eating disorder in which a person alternates eating binges with purging

DEPRESSION - an emotional state in which the person feels hopeless and worthless

PHOBIA - anxiety that is related to a specific situation or object

SCHIZOPHRENIA - a serious mental disorder characterized by unpredictable disturbances in thinking, mood, awareness, and behavior

SUICIDE - the intentional killing of one’s self

THERAPY & COUNSELING - psychiatrist: medical doctors with advances training in the treatment of mental illnesses
neurologist: a physician who specializes in detecting and treating organic disorders of the brain and nervous system
clinical psychologist: a mental-health professional who specializes in recognizing and treating abnormal behavior
social worker: a mental-health professional who counsels patients and provides a link between the patients and the treatment center
occupational therapists: help the mentally ill becomes productive members of society by teaching them practical skills
pastoral counselors: members of the religious community who have have practical training in counseling people with mental and social problems

STRESS - a reaction of the body and mind to a threatening or challenging event in one’s life

DISTRESS - stress that produces a negative effect

EUSTRESS - stress that produces a positive effect

STRESSOR - something that causes stress

FIGHT OR FLIGHT - response from the body to either fight or run away; a series of physical changes that prepare the body to react to stress

ALARM STAGE - first stage; your body releases adrenaline into your blood stream

RESISTANCE STAGE - second stage; the body tries to recover from the alarm stage

EXHAUSTION STAGE - third stage; if the stressor still continues, your body tires out and you no longer have the energy to fight

ADRENALINE - a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that is released in a response to fear or stress; it causes heartbeat, blood pressure, and breathing rates to increase

PSYCHOSOMATIC ILLNESS - a disorder that results from stress or another emotional cause

PERSONALITY TYPES - just as your personality is unique, so, too, is the way you react to potentially stressful situations
type A personalities: tend to be rushed on competitive
type B personalities: calmer, less competitive, and not as concerned about accomplishment

MENTAL HEALTH - the state of being comfortable with oneself, with others, and with one’s surroundings

SELF ESTEEM - how much one likes and feels good about oneself; self-respect

INTROVERT - a person whose thoughts and feelings are directed inward

EXTROVERT - a friendly, outgoing person

PASSIVE - holding back one’s feelings and yielding to others

ASSERTIVE - self-assured; able to stand up for oneself and express feelings in a non threatening way

AGGRESSIVE - communicating one’s opinions and feelings in a way that may seem threatening or disrespectful to others

OPTIMIST - a person who focuses on the positive side of things and expects a favorable outcome

PESSIMIST - a person who focuses on the negative side of things and expects an unfavorable outcome

COPING STRATEGIES - a way of dealing with an uncomfortable or unbearable feeling or situation

DEFENSE MECHANISM - an unconscious coping strategy; a way of defending oneself against difficult feelings
rationalization: making excuses for actions or feelings
denial: refusing the existence of an emotion or problem
projection: putting your own faults unto another person
regression: returning to immature behaviors to express emotions

EMOTION - feeling; a reaction to a situation that evolves a person’s body, mind, and behavior

FREUD- concluded that each individual’s personality is made up of three parts: the id, ego and the superego; people’s minds operate at two levels of thought: conscious and unconscious
id: consists of biological urges, such as hunger and thirst
ego: the thoughtful, decision-making part of the personality
superego: part of the personality that judges right from wrong, or what you might refer to as your conscience
conscious: those thoughts of which a person is aware
unconscious: thoughts of which a person is not aware

ERICKSON - devised an eight-stage theory of personality development during which we search for our identity (see page 29 for chart)

MASLOW -theorized that everyone has a basic drive to achieve his or her fullest potential; used the term self-actualization to describe the process by which each person strives to be all that he or she can be; he put these needs in ascending order, called the hierarchy of needs (see page 31 for chart)

WELLNESS - a broad concept of health that includes a combination of physical, mental, and social well-being

HEALTH - the well-being of your body, mind, and relationships with other people

VALUES - standards, beliefs, and ideals that are important to a person and help the person clarify what he or she believes is right or wrong

PREVENTION - the practice of healthy behaviors that keep a person free of disease and other health problems

RISK FACTOR - an action or condition that increases the likelihood of injury, disease, or other negative outcome
behavioral - choices you make, and situations you put yourself into
hereditary - all the traits passed biologically from parent to child
environmental - all of the environmental and social conditions surrounding a person and the influences they have on the person

ILLNESS-WELLNESS CONTINUUM - a model that illustrates the full range of health between extremes of illness on one end and wellness on the the end (see page 5 for chart)

HEREDITY - the passing on of biological characteristics from parent to child
