I know! I was in shock that I have been going to Central Park for years but never ventured above the zoo area in the upper 70s. I had no idea how amazing things got all the way up. Apparently further north from the gardens above is the part of the park called the Harlem Meer with lots of lush wildgrowth. We were going to go there last Saturday but the weather got really gross so we just stayed around the gardens above.
It's funny becuase I have been watching this very long documentary on NYC (Ric Burns- New York: A Documentary Film) and the segment on the building of the park was fascinating. The urban planners back when making NYC what it is wanted a place where the masses could go to relax and feel like they were away from the hustle and bustle of the city since back when it was made, the population boom and less housing was making things very tense. I think they succeeded in their goal :D
Ah. You live uptown too! Most people I know who live in NY live downtown or in the outer boroughs (Brooklyn and Queens). I always feel like I am talking in foreign terms when I talk about living up near Spanish Harlem.
It was quite the week for discovering the North part of Central Park ;)
Both were a pleasant surprise. You will really like the museum. It's not a large one but it is very fun. The floor where they have the Broadway props also has the antique toy collection and this insane dollhouse. I am kicking myself for not taking pics of that floor.

We recently went to Governor's Island. Really nice - free ferry & tours. Nice for a picnic outing if you feel like an adventure in the harbor.
