"I'll always be there for you; That means no time to waste; Whenever there's a chance." ~Cherry Blossom Girl, Air

It was one of the longest days she'd had in a long time on the job.
When she got the news that Mac was being held hostage at the bank, she thought to herself that she was being tested. She had to be. But when she got there, Stella had confirmed the fact and she felt that familiar pain swelling up inside of her again. Just as it had with Danny, Murphy, and Rachel. Mac couldn't get hurt. The team would fall apart without him.
But, she was able to breathe a sigh of relief when she got the call from Adam that he was okay. Her Captain had dropped her from her current case so that she could help Flack and the lab find the man named "Joe" who'd tried to kill Mac and put him behind bars. Hirsch got away with hurting Danny, and Vincent was brought back from the dead after Murphy, while the Joker remained on the loose after murdering Harvey Dent. She just needed one damn perp to go to jail before she lost all hope. But that would have to wait until after all the evidence was processed and they could find the crafty little bastard.
Just before her coffee run, she'd heard from Adam about Samantha's car being involved in the Scott case - and had praised her friend for how he handled it and Mac. She'd seen the interrogation with Danny, and how Don and Sam fought just outside the bullpen. His family had been one area that they'd never touched in their seven-and-a-half months together, so Anna wasn't sure exactly how to approach the issue. But, she loved Don and made a promise to always be there for him. And with Anna - a promise was for life.
Walking up to Don, two styrofoam cups balanced in one hand, she placed the other gently on his shoulder, speaking softly. "Hey. Look like you could use one of these." She offered one of the cups - the only one filled with coffee, and just the way he preferred it.
Flack glanced over his shoulder, before taking the coffee from her and raising it to her slightly. "Thanks. Any new information yet?" His personal life had been paraded around enough today. He didn't need to go through it again.
"Adam told Mac about the connection with-- and uh, Mac took it pretty well. Adam's in tact." She offered with a shrug, cradling her tea in her hands.
"Good," Flack said with a nod. "We'd be in a real pile of shit if he wasn't." He was trying to joke around. It probably came out a bit flat considering his mind was elsewhere. "I should go see if they found anything else on the car."
"They'll page you, Don. You know that." She said softly, placing a hand on his forearm in an attempt to stop him. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," he said, giving her a small smile. "Why wouldn't I be fine?"
She took a brief moment to glare at anyone who was attempting to eavesdrop -- which was intense enough to send most of the boys running -- before shaking her head at Don, a small smile on her lips - as if she were reminiscing. "We never talked about your family when we were dating, but I've picked up on a few things. And in the time I've known you, when these things happen, you're not okay."
"I'm fine, Anna," he said, a slight growl as he clearly didn't want to talk about this here and now. "I don't have time for this right now."
"Just... don't forget to find time. Or it'll eat you up inside." She kept her voice low so only he could hear her. And, after a pause, she looked down at her tea and whispered. "Not used to your head spinning so much, I know. After a while... it gets easier."
"I'm fine, Anna," he repeated. "I'll deal with it. It's not like something like this hasn't happened before." And it hasn't -- this is far from the first time that Sam had pulled shit like this, and he highly doubted it would be the last.
"I was referring to everything that's happened in the last two months, not just her. Well -- two months as of last Friday would be when everything technically began to spiral out of control." Anna shrugged, looking defeated. "I just want you to know that you're not alone, and if you need a shoulder to lean on... I have two of them. I'm sure Jess or Lindsay will make theirs available as well, if you... wanted to um, lean on them instead. Because it's-- I'm-- things are weird."
Why she was picking now of all times to have this conversation, Flack didn't know, but apparently they were having it. "I'm fine, Anna. And I'm sorry that things are weird right now, but -- I'm still adjusting." He wasn't sure if that was what she wanted to hear or not, but he was really starting to hope that it would be enough to get her to drop it.
"That's what Jess said." She just nodded, her face going blank. "If you need anything let me know. I can cover a shift or take second for you after this is over if you need down time. If you hear anything about this Joe thing, let me know. Adam was the only one really keeping me in the light even though the Captain put me on this."
"Will do," Flack said with a nod. "I'm gonna go catch up with Lindsay -- see if she's got anything new."
Anna nodded, tossing her half-full tea mug in the trash, not feeling in the mood for tea anymore and kicking herself for fucking up the simplest task once again. "I think I'll--" She just shook her head and started walking. It didn't matter what she doing anyway. If they needed her, they'd call her, and Flack wasn't her babysitter. He was preoccupied and with good reason -- and her attempt at being a good friend had backfired miserably because she couldn't just keep her mouth shut. She needed to get out before she did any more damage.
Flack headed out of the precinct and headed back in the direction of the lab -- that was where he needed to be right now. Because the sooner this case was closed, the better.
Anna watched him leave from her spot just outside the precinct, where she'd been banging her head against the wall and cursing incessantly, sighing heavily and shaking her head once more. 'So much for being there for him.'
