It's hard to believe that it's already the end of the year again. I know that many of you may be thinking about making donations to charity. As has become something of a holiday tradition for me, here's a post with some resources to help you think about charitable giving ( Read more... )

I was just thinking yesterday how I wanted to ask you if you were going to make a post like this again this year. Thanks for reading my mind (but quit it *g).

I always joke that my job is really a public service and I am therefore exempt from giving charity money to humans*.

On the other hand, I'm a sucker for the local Humane Society since both Gatz and Lucy are alumni. It's either that or I'd end up as one of those weird ladies with twenty cats.

What a star you are for reminding everybody of the less fortunate this time of year.

* Aside from doing the 'buy a prepackaged bag of groceries for needy families' from the grocery store when I'm feeling flush and/or guilty and giving old clothes to the local charities.

Good one! Here's a handy link if you want to find your local animal shelter to make a donation.

All my kitties (including the late William the Huge) are in the 2008 calendar this year. I bought four copies AND donated to have the photos submitted.

Five Stang kitehs!

Giving SPCA calendars/whatever as gifts is a nice way to support your local animal shelter. Most places also will take donations of food/litter and blankets/towels if you have extra.

The hard part is leaving there without another pet or two!

The kiteh boyz send love to their Northern cousins!

The icon is Gatz's photo from the shelter website before he became the pampered prince that he is.

Yeah, we do the prepackaged grocery bag thing too. And this weekend we're going through the closets to weed out the don't-fit-anymores for donation, too.

I'm not feeling too consumed with holiday spirit this year. On the other hand, the Grifyn is really into it so I suppose it averages out...

Thanks for the reminder. I'd like to put in a plug for some of my favorite causes:

International Rescue Committee
The IRC is a global leader in emergency relief, rehabilitation, protection of human rights, post-conflict development, resettlement services and advocacy for those uprooted or affected by violent conflict and oppression.

Amnesty International
AI’s mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights.

Wildlife Conservation Society
The Wildlife Conservation Society saves wildlife and wild lands. We do so through careful science, international conservation, education, and the management of the world's largest system of urban wildlife parks, led by the flagship Bronx Zoo. (Note: A donation gets you membership at the Bronx Zoo!)

I'm actually a long-time supporter of both AI and MSF - great organizations all. Thanks for sharing these links and descriptions.

You've covered many of my favorite charities, but I'd like to add UNICEF to the list.

Another good one. This cold I have is clearly rotting my brain - I'm actually a "friend of UNICEF" (i.e., I'm signed up in their monthly donations program). Thanks for adding it!
