Hongbin woke up with a jump, tears in his eyes and heart beating loudly in his ears. He looked around the dark room. His brother Zitao were snoring from the bed beside him but that didn’t calm him down. He wanted his mom. With unsteady leg he slipped out of bed and tiptoed out of their room, careful not to wake his brother.
When he was outside the room and had closed the door, he let out the first sob. His heart ached and he didn’t know what to do. Slowly, he wobbled through the corridor in their house, tears rolling down his cheeks. His whole frame was shaking as he reached for the door handle of his papa and daddy’s door. He missed the door handle, then he missed it again and he just sank down against the door. His heart hammered against his ribcage and his breathing was harsh.
“M-mom,” he choked out, knowing that his mother wouldn’t answer. He could hear something moving on the other side of the door, soft footstep against the carpet and the door opened. Someone crouched down beside the crying boy and when a hand was placed on his cheek, Hongbin looked up. It was dark and tears blurred his vision, but he could see his daddy’s blond hair.
“Daddy,” he whispered between the tears and his daddy picked him up, cradling him against his naked chest. He could hear the steady rhythm of his daddy’s heart and he could feel his own, small heart calming down.
“What’s the matter Hongbin?” he asked softly as he carried the child into their room, sitting down on the bed with Hongbin still in his arms.
“I miss mom,” the boy whispered, sniffling a little and his daddy just tightened his hug. His heart ached so much and he still missed his mother.
“Junmyeon?” Hongbin’s papa asked, voice heavy with sleep and as his daddy were drying Hongbin’s tears, his papa sat up in bed. Soon a big hand was placed on his head, fingers threading through his hair. “Nightmare again?”
He nodded into his daddy’s shoulder and sniffled. The dream about his mother leaving him, Sanghyuk and his papa was a normal but the last week, the dream changed. Not only his mother left him, but Sanghyuk and his papa also left, leaving him alone in the pitch black space. He slowly stopped crying as his daddy was rocking him gently back and forth, lulling him back to sleep. Slowly slowly, the memory of his dream drifted away and his eyes fell shut.
“I’m worried about him,” Junmyeon whispered as soon as Hongbin’s breathing got even. Taekwoon moved around the bed, sitting down beside Junmyeon. He ran his hand along Junmyeon’s arm and then stroked Hongbin’s hair. “Should we ask anyone about this?”
“I think so…” Taekwoon answered, sighing. “This is the third time this week.”
“I’ll call the school tomorrow and maybe I can talk to the counselor. I’m sure he can help us,” Junmyeon answered and stood up, placing down Hongbin in the middle of their bed. While Taekwoon went back to his side of the bed, Junmyeon stood up to check on their youngest, Sanghyuk. The one and a half year old were sleeping like a log, snoring loudly. He then looked towards Taekwoon, who were snuggling Hongbin close. “Should I get Zitao?”
“You think he needs to come here?” Taekwoon asked, crooking an eyebrow. “He haven’t slept with us for a while now.”
“He’s going to be scared when he wakes up when he’s going to the bathroom and Hongbin is not in his bed. You know how he is,” Junmyeon smiled and sat down on his side of the bed. He looked at the clock, 1.54, that’s around the time Zitao woke up to go to the toilet. “I think he’s coming here soon.”
He lied down on his side, looking at Taekwoon and Hongbin. Hongbin was snuggled close against Taekwoon’s chest and Junmyeon smiled widely at the sight. It made his heart swell in happiness, knowing that this was his family.
“I love you,” he whispered and Taekwoon cracked an eye open. He smiled and opened the other eye. Junmyeon moved even closer, squishing Hongbin between the two of them and kissed Taekwoon on the lips.
“I love you too,” he whispered as they parted and Junmyeon smiled, laying his head back down on the pillow. He observed Taekwoon as a look of guilt flashed over his face. “Do you think she would have wanted me to do this? I mean, being in a relationship?”
By she, Taekwoon meant his late wife. She died when she gave birth to Sanghyuk. They had her picture on their wall down in the living room. Junmyeon smiled and nodded. “She would have wanted you to be happy, Taekwoon. And I want to be with you as long as I make you happy.”
“Thank you,” Taekwoon said, eyes glossy. It was rare for him to display such vulnerable emotions, but it was during those times that Junmyeon loved him the most.
A silence rested in the room, Sanghyuk was breathing heavily from his crib and Taekwoon’s breathing had started to evens out. Then the sound of quickly approaching footsteps was heard and through the open door, a sobbing Zitao came.
“D-daddy,” he cried and Junmyeon is quickly up from bed. He quickly picked up the crying boy in his arms and hushed him. “Th-there’s a monster under my bed.”
“Oh sweetie,” Junmyeon cooed, pressing a kiss on Zitao’s temple. He bounced the boy in his arms as good as he could, Zitao was starting to become too heavy to carry. “There are no monsters.”
“B-but I heard so-something an-and Hongbin is n-not in his bed,” Zitao sobbed into his daddy’s shoulder. Junmyeon just smiled and continued to hush his son. “I-I think the mo-monster a-ate Hongbin.”
Junmyeon smiled and kissed the top of Zitao’s head. His son was so cute and softhearted. It made Junmyeon’s heart swell when his son showed so much care for his new brothers.
“Hongbin had a nightmare,” he explained gently and Zitao lifted his head from Junmyeon’s chest, looking up at him with wide, tear filled eyes. Zitao had always been easily frightened and scared of separation. When it was just the two of them, Junmyeon had Zitao’s bed in his room just because of that. Tonight was the first time since they moved together that Zitao had woken up crying.
Gently, Junmyeon placed down Zitao on the bed beside Hongbin. The other boy had woken up due to Zitao’s crying and he was now sitting up. He looked sleepy, eyes almost falling shut. But when Zitao arrived at the bed, he woke up a bit.
“Ge,” he said quietly, reaching out to pet Zitao’s cheek. The word was one of the only Chinese words Hongbin knew, but each time he used it, Zitao became happy. The effect was immediate and Zitao dried his tears. Even if there were just a few months between them in age, Hongbin insisted to call Zitao ‘hyung’ and later they changed it to ‘ge’.
“I’m o-okay,” Zitao said, putting on his bravest smile. He wanted to be the brave big brother and he really tried, even if he was scared of monsters.
“Now boys, let’s sleep. Daddy and papa need to work tomorrow and you two have daycare. You need to sleep,” Junmyeon said and the children nodded, quickly lying down. They snuggled together, arms wrapped around each other and Taekwoon smiled fondly at them.
“You two are so cute,” he said and he could hear Hongbin giggle.
“Daddy’s cute,” Zitao mumbled as sleep started taking over him and Junmyeon rolled his eyes.
“Go to sleep, you silly goose,” he said and Zitao giggled. Junmyeon lied down in bed again and felt sleep overcome him.

Junmyeon woke up with a groan just two hours later. He glanced at the clock, 4.05 a.m. When he looked over at Taekwoon’s side, the bed was empty. He then rolled over to his other side, only to see Taekwoon lulling Sanghyuk back to sleep.
“He woke up,” Taekwoon whispered and Junmyeon smiled, slowly sitting up. Sanghyuk were still whimpering and Junmyeon stood up, reaching out to take the child from his boyfriend.
“Hey,” he called out gently, looking down at Sanghyuk who stared back with wide eyes. “You should be sleeping.”
“Pa,” Sanghyuk said and waved his arms. Though, his eyes were getting heavy and Junmyeon could see how he was fighting sleep. Taekwoon moved to stand behind Junmyeon, looking down at Sanghyuk over Junmyeon’s shoulder
“No, sleeping,” he said but Sanghyuk shook his head. He was at the age where he had great understanding of words and he had a few words he could say. Pa and Da was two of them.
“Hongbin and Zitao is already asleep, you need to sleep if you want to play with them tomorrow,” Junmyeon said, gently stroking Sanghyuk’s black hair. At the mention of his older brothers’ name, Sanghyuk’s eyes lit up and he started wiggling in Junmyeon’s arms.
“Tao! Bin!” he said, smiling widely and showing his six teeth.
“Yes, your hyungs. You have to sleep if you want to play with them,” Taekwoon said and reached to stroke Sanghyuk’s nose bridge. The small, coffee brown eyes slowly started to become too heavy for Sanghyuk and Junmyeon smiled as they closed shut. Taekwoon leaned down to rest his head on Junmyeon’s shoulder, watching his son fall asleep.
When Sanghyuk’s breathing had evened out, Junmyeon gently placed him back in the crib. As soon as the child was in the bed, Taekwoon wrapped his arms around Junmyeon’s waist, pressing his face into Junmyeon’s shoulder.
“Thank you,” he mumbled and Junmyeon raised his eyebrows.
“For what? Putting him to sleep? You know, I really enjoy having a small child again so you don’t have to thank me,” Junmyeon said and wrapped his arms around Taekwoon’s neck.
“No,” Taekwoon said, lifting his head from Junmyeon’s shoulder. He smiled a little and pressed a kiss at the corner of Junmyeon’s mouth. “Thank you for appearing in mine and the kids’ life, I don’t know what we would have done without you.”
Taekwoon was a man of few words, he had always been. When they first met, Taekwoon barely spoke to Junmyeon at all. It had been kind of awkward when they sat in the park, watching Zitao and Hongbin playing. Back then, Junmyeon talked more to Hongbin, translating what Zitao said, than talking with Taekwoon.
So hearing Taekwoon talking so much about his feelings tonight was a rare thing.
“You’re so talkative today,” Junmyeon said, smiling at his boyfriend. “Why is that?”
“Dunno,” Taekwoon said quietly, kissing Junmyeon again. Junmyeon tightened his arms around Taekwoon’s shoulders and smiled against Taekwoon’s lips.
“I love you,” he said simply when Taekwoon pulled away.
“Love you too,” he said and kissed Junmyeon again. The kiss got to the point where Junmyeon let out a quiet moan and he quickly pulled back.
“The kids are here, can we take this tomorrow?” he asked and Taekwoon chuckled, nodding. He kissed Junmyeon one last time on the nose before loosing his arms around the smaller male. Junmyeon could feel his ears heat up and he quickly went back to bed.
When they got back to bed, both Hongbin and Zitao had rolled over to Taekwoon’s side of the bed. Taekwoon just grinned and placed a hand on Junmyeon’s bare waist. “Guess we’ll share your side.”
Junmyeon turned his head hand glared playfully at Taekwoon before he lied down. He moved over, making space for Taekwoon. Their side of the bed was the smaller one so Taekwoon wrapped his arms around Junmyeon and brought him closer, giving the kids even more space in their bed.
“Goodnight,” Junmyeon mumbled tiredly into Taekwoon’s chest and the older smiled, stroking his hair gently. Junmyeon brought up his hand to cup Taekwoon’s cheek and gently caressed his cheekbone.
“Goodnight.”
