It is my pleasure to announce that my fourth grandchild was born yesterday after 9pm!!! It is a boy, named Jiří - George after his dad and had 4680g

So now it's two children from each child? I lost track - I thought Jirka was still living with or near you.
Are Jiří and Jirka both short names for Czech George, or is one the full name? Is it a common tradition for names to run in families? My Greek friend told me that Greeks give children the names of their grandparents. Usually, if the first child is a boy, he gets the name of his grandfather from the father’s side. If it is a girl, sh has the mother’s mother's name. Nowadays though some people make that the second name so they can freely choose one. Actually my second name is my mother's mother's one (Ruth), and my sister's second name is our father's mother's one (Miriam), but it's not a set tradition; my brother didn't get a grandfather's name.
Well, keeping up with the family movement is demanding but yes, there are a girl and a boy from my both children. Jirka lives 25 km far from Spolí and Marta 235 km.:-)
Jiří=George. Jirka, Jiřík, Jiříček are deminutives. Jiří is very formal, everyone uses mostly Jirka or Jiřík - and my grandson is Jiříček - very endearing deminutive. Czech names have not second names after parents but the use of old family names has not disappear yet completely.New generation sometimes prefer "modern" names. Old Czech names are still the most favourite ones though: Václav, Jan, Vojtěch Josef Jirí.:-)
Thank you! And yes, I am just participating on Kamila´s "work"!LOL Well, I have had lots of fun and I am just prapared to fall on my face, LOL.
I believe it is rare now to follow these old "family names". But the name is lovely and there was no discussion about this. There was a big discusion about Valerie though, LOL again.

My father's name was George. It wasn't a 'family' name, though. I don't think either side of my family went in for those at all.
