Chapter 5

Someone’s calling him.

“Hyukjae, time to wake up.”

He opens his eyes and sees a blurred shadow of a person above him.

“Hyukjae?”

His vision clears and he sees Mr. Lee in a black wifebeater, brown hair tousled from sleep, tongue poking out to moisten his lips.

Hyukjae groans and pulls the blanket over himself, not completely because of sleepiness.

“No lazing around, come on,” a hand comes down to slap him lightly on the stomach. Hyukjae whines in response.

“Oh?”

Then he’s being tickled and he can’t help but squirm and twist and yell, gasping for air. He’s aware that some of the noises coming out of his mouth aren’t quite innocent in a way but thank god Mr. Lee doesn’t take notice. He feels like drowning himself in the bathroom later.

An annoyed Ryeowook sits up with his hair falling over his eyes. “Hyukjae you’re so noisy.” Sungmin sits up right after him, frowning and nodding in agreement.

“Great, all of you are awake,” Mr. Lee straightens up, “anyone taking a shower?”

“Me,” Hyukjae immediately says and grabs his towel and clothes and closes the bathroom door behind him. He decides that a cold shower would be good to cool off for the morning.

After half an hour, the three of them have finished washing up and Mr. Lee’s having his turn in the shower. Sungmin taps his shoulder in the middle of watching tv with Ryeowook.

“So, um, are you planning to do anything?”

“About wha-oh. I’m not very sure.”

“You know, I was thinking, maybe you could record the date and what happens each day in case for future reference?”

“You mean like in a book.”

“Mhm.”

“Yeah, I guess I can do that.”

“You can even sketch down anything you remember……time to bring your artistic skills into use…..”

The bathroom door opens and Mr. Lee appears, drying off his hair with a towel, wearing yet another wifebeater, water dripping from his chin. Leaving the towel hanging on his head, he wipes the water off his face with his hands and reaches behind him to turn off the bathroom light. Hyukjae blanks and stares as if he’s in a trance while the man goes on to wear his outfit.

“………maybe you can start right now when your memory is fresh…….. are you even listening to me?” Sungmin punches him lightly on the shoulder.

“Honestly, no.”

“What are you thinking about?”

“Nothing.”

“Or who,” Sungmin gives him a knowing smirk, “like some cold guy who’s quiet most of the time who you’ve been staring at from yesterday or maybe for a long time already?”

Hyukjae is at a loss of words.

“I’ve been helping though, he seems to know quite a lot about you.”

His brain clicks. “Oh come on, Kibum?”

“Who’d it be then?”

“No, I don’t like him. I mean, I like him as a friend, but not as a……you know.”

“Stop denying it, loverboy,” Sungmin pats his hand sympathetically in that way of his and goes back to watching tv with Ryeowook and Hyukjae rolls his eyes, leaving his friend to his thoughts.

“Everyone ready?” Mr. Lee slings his backpack over his shoulders and stands in front of the tv, earning a protest from Sungmin and Ryeowook. Hyukjae hops off the bed to grab his bag.

They meet everyone else at breakfast, and Sungmin runs off to sit beside Kyuhyun and somehow pushes Hyukjae into the seat to Kibum’s right with a glint in his eye. Ryeowook giggles at the sight of them sitting together. Sungmin must have told him, Hyukjae thinks as he stabs his egg with his fork. His friend keeps on kicking him under the table, probably not intending to stop. Saving himself from more bruises on his legs, Hyukjae taps Kibum’s shoulder.

“Um, hi, whatever my friend has told you, you can just put it at the back of your mind.”

“You mean how he’s been telling me every little detail of your daily life?”

Oh god, Sungmin, that’s not what you do when helping someone with his crush. “He thinks I have a crush on you.”

Kibum laughs. “Oh, I figured.”

“And I can’t eat my breakfast in peace unless I come and talk to you.”

“I didn’t know you guys were that open to homosexuality.”

“Well, I know that some people in this school aren’t very open to the idea but we’re totally fine.”

“Are you…… do you like guys?”

“So straightforward, but yeah. You?”

“I don’t, but I’m okay with it.”

“Good to find someone understanding.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone if it’s a personal thing.” Kibum gives him a thumbs up.

“My god, you guys were so cute snuggling up like that during breakfast.” Sungmin squeals half an hour later as they gather at the lobby of the hotel, getting ready to head out for the conference.

“Oh yeah, it was great, kind of like a date,” Hyukjae says sarcastically, ignoring Sungmin’s overexcited squeak. “How was yours with Kyuhyun?”

“We’re not dating!”

“I never said you were,” Hyukjae smirks.

His friend blushes a little bit but retorts, “we’re just really good friends okay?”

A loud cough comes from behind, and Ryeowook walks up to put his hand on Hyukjae’s shoulder, looking him in the eye. “Being their third wheel is like living in a nightmare. Believe me.”

“No, you were having fun too Wook!” Sungmin cries indignantly.

Ryeowook just stares at him. “I’m just gonna go, okay?” He aims a forced smile at Hyukjae and turns to walk away. Hyukjae can’t help but snigger and pull Ryeowook back for a high five.

After organizing the students and double checking the roll call, the teachers lead their own assigned groups towards the university where the conference would take place. Mr. Lee was with them; he seemed to be in a good mood, chatting with another teacher leading three other students they didn’t know.

The university was huge, and Hyukjae worriedif he’ll get lost in there somewhere. But the morning passed fairly smoothly, everyone having gathered into the auditorium for the orientation that took a few hours. There were so many students from schools all over the country, Hyukjae was overwhelmed for a while.

After lunch in the building everyone got split up in groups so that students from the same school weren’t together. Discussions, debates, and small group activities kept everyone busy until late afternoon when Hyukjae got to see a few familiar faces again. Feeling relieved that he managed to work his way out to where Mr. Lee had assigned for them to meet, he ran towards a distinct pink backpack and backhugged its owner.

“I’m so tired,” he groans as Sungmin jumps.

“Oh, hey, Hyuk,” Sungmin pats his arm and snuggles against him. “This is a friend from my group. Derek, this is Hyukjae. Hyukjae, Derek.”

“Yo what’s up?” the dark haired boy raises his hand cooly.

“I found out that we booked the same hotel as their school, so I invited him over to our room tonight. Is that alright?” Sungmin asks as Hyukjae latches off him.

“Really?” Hyukjae turns to Derek. “You know anyone called Sarah?”

“Sarah? Yeah, she’s from my school. Is she in your group?”

“Yup, ask her if she wants to come over tonight then.”

“Awesome.” Derek grins a handsome smile and glances at his watch. “Oops, I gotta meet up with my team. See you guys later?”

“Bye, Derek!” Sungmin waves and says happily, “he’s really handsome isn’t he?”

Hyukjae chuckles. “I have to agree on that. Although he’s not your type. Nope.”

“Then who is?”

Hyukjae sighs in exasperation. “Forget it. By the way, can you lend me your folder? I want to see if you prepared any information I could use for tomorrow.”

“So lazy, jeez, but yeah. So who is?”

Hyukjae spots Ryeowook from a distance and quickly runs to him.
