Sungmin trudged up the steps to the roof holding a bottle of wine and an empty glass. Soft wind blew through his brown locks of hair as his sneakers scraped against the gravel under his shoes. Lifting his head to gaze up into the dark and open sky, he took a deep breath of the cool night air. He set his things down with a soft clink and slowly sat down on the floor, knees cuddled to his chest. The night sky sparkled with numerous tiny stars, calm and serene, but Sungmin’s eyes searched frantically around for the brightest one that motivated him to come up to the rooftop every night.
His eyes locked on a sparkling dot that stood out from the darkness.
It was his star. Sungmin’s star.
He sighed as he poured a small amount of the red liquid into the clear glass. He loved everything about wine. The unique bitter taste, the peculiar smell, and the feeling of pleasure as it ran down his throat. It was his antidote for stress, and his remedy to relaxation. But it was also the cause to the sharp pains in his heart, the creator of his tears.
He swirled the red liquid in the glass before taking another sip. Images of a kind smile and shining eyes flashed through his mind.
Sungmin shook his head. Tonight he wanted it to be free without the sadness embedded deep in his heart. But it seemed like the sadness would unconsciously slip out. He stared at the spacious view of Seoul before him. Yellow streetlights dotted the streets while small zooming cars made their way through the intricate neighborhood. A piercing laugh from the dorms below struck through the silence. Sungmin’s lips curled into a thin smile. It was Heechul, with no doubt. It had been a long time since anyone had heard laughter among the members like that. Since……
Sungmin growled inwardly in annoyance. Why did everything remind him of that person, the one who was causing him all his pain, the man that no longer stayed with the members of Super Junior. The one that was always optimistic and responsible for the younger ones. The one that was funny with his awkward accented Korean. The one who Sungmin’s heart stayed with for all these years.
The star shined prettily in the dark sky, showing off all its luminosity compared to the other stars.
In Sungmin’s eyes, he could only see him. In his eyes, he was one that stood out from the others. His graceful dancing particularly attracted him. The way his arms and legs moved, creating beautiful visual art in Sungmin’s eyes.
Another piercing laugh sounded below, this time Leeteuk’s.
Sungmin had to chuckle at the leader’s unique laughter, one that no one could imitate.
But the man always belonged to his roommate, Heechul. They were inseparable. It always pained Sungmin’s heart to see the two together, often the sight of Heechul poking fun at the other’s gullible mistakes. Then they would both laugh and whisper into each other’s ears. It was worse when they made fanservice on stage, and on tv shows being all close with each other and the fans screaming their names and……….
Sungmin stood up abruptly, knocking down the glass of wine beside him loudly. Ignoring the mess he made, he paced around blindly for a few circles before leaning against the cold smooth wall.
Panting, he closed his eyes for a while to calm down. As his breaths returned back to normal, his chest felt more and more painful and muddled.
He heard sounds of droplets hitting the ground. He raised his head to the night sky, but it wasn’t raining. He realized that it was his own tears after feeling the wetness of his cheeks.
He had never wanted it to be this way. He didn’t mean to fall in love with him.
Sungmin gritted his teeth. It was so stupid of him.
So stupid.
So stupid of him falling for someone who would never love him back.
His tears flowed freely down his cheeks, making dark splotches on the ground.
But it was too late. He was gone already. And he would never come back.
Sometimes Sungmin would regret not confessing at all. At least he would feel a lot better than now. At least the other would know how he felt. And maybe, maybe, a tiny chance of possibility, the other would feel the same.
Sungmin slumped down to the ground, sobbing harder than ever. He didn’t care if he disturbed the other members; they knew he would be like this every time he headed up to the roof. They already gave up a long time ago on him anyway, since he wasn’t one of the more notable ones of their group. It hurt him even more when the fans supported the others more than they supported him, but he knew he wasn’t funny enough or clever enough to participate in variety shows. He hated himself for that.
But now his wings of support were gone, his motivation to endure everything was not with him anymore. No more of those caring pats on the head, no more of those hugs of consolation, no more of those talks of encouragement. The light he could only see disappeared away to China.
The star glinted bright once more as passing clouds veiled it from Sungmin’s view, its beam of light disappearing from his eyes, just as Hankyung did when he left.
