Summary: Donghae doesn't have a date, and it's not too late, so why not?
A/N: This came to me one night randomly. Don't ask me why. :/
Two days before Valentine’s Day and Donghae is getting more and more annoyed. And desperate. Annoyed because of all the red and pink he’s seeing everywhere and the chocolate and the happy people walking in pairs on the street. Desperate because of the fact that he’s going to be spending time alone in two days time.
In school, he can’t stand the overwhelming décor of huge puffy hearts in the hallways and the nonstop giggling of girls echoing in his ears. Not to mention the high pitched screaming during confessions and the squeals when couples gives each other mushy nauseating looks.
The day before Valentines he tries to choose between the last six girls in his class as his date, but immediately decides not to after realizing how weird they actually were after a few awkward conversations.
On the dreaded day the moment he steps out of his house he feels sicker and sicker by the second. To make matters worse, his friends tease him for not being able to go to the “couples only” what kind of a stupid rule is that? party that night. Donghae guesses that videogames would be his partner for the rest of the day.
He slumps down on his table miserably as he waits for the teacher to come in and start her class. Then someone taps his shoulder and he looks up to see Hyukjae, the leader of the dance team and the boy from the other class in his grade. Donghae wonders why he’s here, they having not met even once, looking terribly embarrassed and hands hidden behind his back. Donghae greets the redhead normally, and Hyukjae greets him back shyly, and the two stay like that for a few silent moments. He doesn’t know why, but people are staring and pointing and whispering at him and Hyukjae. But Donghae chooses to ignore them, although he would’ve glared and shouted something back at them if Hyukjae wasn’t there.
Then suddenly the boy in front of him holds out a small box of chocolates wrapped prettily in red and his hands tremble, cheeks tinged pink and saying something that is almost inaudible.
Donghae, will you be my valentine?
The gasps and whispers rise in volume and Donghae’s certain that rumors would be flying around the school any second. It’s not that he has anything against two boys being together but he hates the talking behind his back and the uncomfortable gazes he would get.
He looks into Hyukjae’s timid, and handsome, face who looks as if he’s about to faint, his eyes darting back and forth between Donghae’s and the floor. Donghae tries to say something, but torn between not wanting to hurt the innocent boy in front of him and facing the reality after he says the word Hyukjae is hoping for.
He opens his mouth but remembers suddenly that if he did say yes, he wouldn’t be alone anymore. Hyukjae would be happy and he’d have someone to spend time with for the rest of the day and someone to accompany him to the party. Both ways would benefit, right?
Donghae puts on a smile, trying to press down the wave of guilt inside him and takes the box of chocolates from Hyukjae’s hands, assuming that Hyukjae doesn’t know that he hates sweets, and at the same time murmuring the word that makes Hyukjae blush even harder.
Yes.
There goes the squealing of the girls again as Hyukjae grins unbelievably and leaps on Donghae for a hug. Donghae is startled and steadies himself on his seat before wrapping two arms around the boy, who he can hear crying in happiness. He rubs the other’s back in soothing circles, hugging Hyukjae tighter, the warmth enveloping his body.
The bell rings and, thank god the teacher isn’t here yet, Hyukjae pulls slowly away from Donghae while wiping his tears with the back of his hand. Donghae sees how adorable and helpless he looks with his eyes red and tear tracks down his cheeks and smiling at Donghae like he’s the best thing that’s ever happened in his life. Donghae finally realizes how a person can actually glow.
After school, Hyukjae waits at the door of Donghae’s classroom, lighting up immediately when he steps out. A big grin is plastered on his face and he tugs at Donghae’s arm like a kid, then asking what plans he has for the night. Donghae tells him he has, and if he’d like to come to the party that night. Hyukjae excitedly nods. The guilt invades Donghae again as he sees the overjoyed Hyukjae in front of him jumping up and down.
After half an hour, Donghae realizes that he’s been pulled into an ice cream shop in a shopping mall by Hyukjae and is watching the other lick his strawberry flavored scoop of ice cream on a cone. He stares at the small pink tongue that darts in and out, savoring the cold taste with each lick. Donghae seriously questions his sexuality and finds it hard to swallow with his throat dry.
Why aren’t you eating yours? It’s going to melt soon, Hyukjae points out at Donghae’s bowl of ice cream, which coincidentally was also strawberry flavored. Donghae clears his throat and picks up the spoon, scooping up a mouthful and trying to shake his previous thoughts out of his mind. He hears a giggle and sees Hyukjae laughing at him. Before having a chance to ask why, Hyukjae takes a napkin and stands up, leans forward and slowly wipes off the pink ice cream smeared on Donghae’s lips, still laughing softly. Then his smile falters when he realizes how close his and Donghae’s faces are. They both blink at each other wordlessly, red creeping up Hyukjae’s cheeks again as he lowers down back into his seat. Donghae chuckles to himself how the boy in front of him is so shy. And he finds it cute.
They enter the house of one of Donghae’s friends, Hyukjae wide eyed at the flashing lights, the huge scatter of people, and the music blaring out from the speakers. Donghae, seeing Hyukjae’s reaction, laughs and ruffles his hair, shouting relax to him over the sound. They meet their friends and introduce and are introduced, and all of a sudden the two are pushed onto the dance floor, Hyukjae terribly embarrassed and Donghae extremely excited. He dances to the beat of the music, trying out the moves he’s been practicing for a while now, enjoying the cheers the crowd has for him, then points to Hyukjae standing at the side.
Hyukjae blushes and looks around at the crowd who’s chanting his name, and his expression hardens. Now Donghae knows why he’s the leader of the dance team. Once he starts, it’s as if something has taken over him, his expression cool and taunting, his movements of the body graceful but powerful. Donghae just stands to the side, mouth open, amazed at the Hyukjae he is looking at now; a few seconds ago he was the timid boy who loved to smile.
Hyukjae ends with a strong finish, and the crowd goes wild, but Hyukjae seems to have returned to his past self and runs, face red, over to Donghae and buries his head into his shoulder. Donghae shouts encouraging words in his ear and hugs him by the waist and swings him around in a circle. He sees Hyukjae smiling that bashful smile of his again. That boy can never stop smiling can he?
A little later Donghae is chatting with his friends and Hyukjae pulls at his sleeve and tells him that he needs to go to the restroom. Donghae nods and says he will stay here and wait for him. Hyukjae then disappears into the crowd in a few seconds. Someone has brought two huge barrels of alcohol and soon everyone’s getting tipsy, and so is Donghae. Time passes as he dances and parties wildly, getting all thoughts out of his mind. Until someone reminds him where’s his cute little boyfriend.
He has never been so worried and scared in his life. Shoving and squeezing people out of the way, he frantically makes his way to the restrooms, but Hyukjae isn’t there. He searches the entire house at least three times, his feet burning and anxiety bubbling up inside him until he spots a boy with red hair, surrounded by a group of taller students. He yells and pushes through them, grabbing Hyukjae’s hand and glaring defiantly up at the towering figures around them. They sneer and someone throws a cup at them, but they eventually leave after spitting a few hurtful words. Fag.
But Donghae doesn’t care right now, he turns to Hyukjae and cups his face in his hands. Hyukjae’s terrified, he’s shaking and sobbing uncontrollably in fear. Donghae hugs him tight and whispers I’m sorry, I’m sorry, so so sorry, into his ear and he feels the boy calm down by each breath. Donghae wants to die for forgetting about him, for leaving him alone in such a place, and the regret hurts so much. So much that he realizes he’s crying too. He’s still mumbling sorry over and over again in between his gasps for being such a bad person and then Hyukjae is reaching up and wiping Donghae’s tears away with his thumbs with a concerned expression on his face. Donghae gazes into Hyukjae’s eyes, at the innocent boy that cares for such a jerk like himself.
Donghae doesn’t know why, maybe it’s the alcohol, but he leans forward uncertainly until they’re nose to nose, and he can feel Hyukjae’s startled breath on his lips. The other is blushing furiously and blinking so fast that Donghae can’t even count. Donghae tilts his head sideways and closes his eyes, leaning forward just a little more until he feels Hyukjae’s soft lips against his, tasting like strawberry.
It’s just a chaste kiss, just lips on lips but amazing tingles shoot through Donghae’s body to the ends of his fingertips. Everything else dims of importance, the loud party music echoing distantly against his ears, the movement of people around them becoming a blur. A few seconds, and Donghae breaks the kiss, surprised at himself. He sees Hyukjae open his eyes, blush, blink, and then rush into the crowd.
Dazed, Donghae runs a hand through his hair. What was he doing? In a day, he couldn’t really………. He’s interrupted by Hyukjae who is running back into view, a joyful smile on his face. The redhead pants a few times and then straightens up, holding a bouquet of roses in his hands.
For you, he says, and Donghae, both happy and guilty inside, takes the beautiful bouquet and breathes out a thank you to Hyukjae. He feels that he doesn’t deserve this.
Something pops into his mind. Where did you get this from? he asks and Hyukjae replies proudly, I bought it myself.
But when? I didn’t see you bringing it here, Donghae is puzzled, but is he being too nosy?
Hyukjae grins wider. When you let me go to the restroom.
Restroom? Donghae thinks, and the realization sinks into him. The boy had snuck out to buy flowers for him. That’s why he wasn't able to find him anywhere near the restrooms. Hyukjae’s eyes are sparkling, and he’s giggling softly at his ingenious plan.
Donghae bites his lip in guilt and pulls the boy into a rough hug, whispering in his ears how much he doesn’t deserve such a nice boy like him and that he should stop being so nice. Hyukjae looks up at him. I like being nice to you. Because then I can see you smile. You should smile more, Donghae.
Donghae’s eyes water and Hyukjae laughs at his attempt to smile while he’s crying. He muffles his giggles into Donghae’s chest while Donghae laughs along with him, hugging him even tighter. He is finally certain, with Hyukjae in his arms, that he doesn’t regret saying yes. And from this moment on, he decides that he’s never going to let him go. Donghae smiles to himself. Maybe Valentine’s Day isn’t too bad after all.
