Being in love with your best friend wasn’t such a bad thing. Unless your best friend meant everything to you. Unless all the intimate touches and moments made you think that there was a tiny possibility he felt the same way. Unless your best friend came running into your arms one day telling you about how his crush asked him on a date. Unless that fateful day had to be the one you finally mustered up your courage to confess. And Donghae certainly thought that loving Sungmin was the worst thing that has happened to him.
So Donghae tried to distance himself away from Sungmin, away from his smile, his laugh, his adorable mannerisms that made his heart flutter every time. But it was impossible, impossible like trying to resist the urge to smile whenever Sungmin called his name or trying to resist dying a little inside when the image of Sungmin and Kyuhyun walking together hand in hand came into view. Donghae became so desperate that he resorted to ripping their friendship apart and enduring the stinging pain of Sungmin’s fist colliding with jaw and the throbbing pain forever imprinted in his heart.
Then the day comes when Donghae is in his apartment, staring lifelessly at the night view outside his window and hears the doorbell ring. He sighs tiredly and opens the door, coming face to face with a sight that completely shatters his already crumbling heart. Sungmin leaps into his arms, clutching hard at his shirt, wails of he left me, he left me muffled in his shoulder. He places his hands lightly on the shaking boy and pats his back, unsure of what to do. It is then he realizes that all his efforts to break off everything between them has gone into waste, and the familiar lightheadedness only Sungmin can give him takes over his mind again.
He wants to wrap his arms around Sungmin, whisper comforting words in his ear to tell him that everything is going to be okay, and feel the touch and warmth of the boy that he loves so much. He does, and in enveloping Sungmin into a tighter hug, Donghae thinks being selfish for just this once was alright.
