Chapter 2

The rest of the trip, thankfully, consisted of only awkward silences between the two. Or just Hyukjae himself feeling awkward. He stared at his feet, fumbled with the things in his backpack, and tried to join the conversation Sungmin and Ryeowook were having beside him. But the two seemed so immersed in their own world that he eventually gave up, feeling a little jealous and left out by the two boys who were giggling at something on Ryeowook’s cellphone. Hyukjae craned his neck. Kibum was still sleeping, face squished by his arm that supported him, Hankyung chatting seriously with Leeteuk about something (they were part of the student council), and, Hyukjae smirked, Kyuhyun glaring at the back of Sungmin and Ryeowook’s seats, looking away quickly only when he caught Hyukjae grinning slyly at him with raised eyebrows. Then he slumped back down onto his chair, eyes trying their best to avoid glancing too often at the man beside him.

He sighed and took out his ipod, wishing that music could help him feel more comfortable. As the songs shuffled through his playlist, his arms and legs felt heavier and the soothing voice of one of his favorite ballad singers lulled him into slumber.

Hyukjae suddenly jolts up for the second time that morning and he looks around with half-lidded eyes. Almost everyone in the bus has been overwhelmed by the temptation of sleep. Blinking at the sunlight coming down through the windows, he realizes that the outside landscape has stopped. Hyukjae lies back down again and tries to grab a few more seconds of rest when he hears a soft snore from his right.

Hyukjae’s heart leaps and he bites on his lower lip, eyes mesmerized by the sleeping form. His eyes travel from the cap that covers half of his face, the perfectly sculpted features looking so solemn but handsome, to his chest rising and falling so peacefully, then to those……….. so kissable lips. Those damn lips. Hyukjae hasn’t noticed, but they were so delicately pink and pouty, slightly ajar from sleep. Tempting him so bad. He gulps and shakes his head frantically, forcing his eyes away. He then stares at Ryeowook blankly and curses himself. His mind is in a haze and he doesn’t hear the teacher start. And then someone at his right is tapping his shoulder.

“Hyukjae, are you sure you’re alright? I swear you’ve gotten redder.”

The next thing he knows, he’s checking in at a hotel that he’s sure would make Siwon bleed in envy. Walking in their hotel room, Sungmin and Ryeowook jumping around and squealing at everything they see, he can’t help but marvel at the luxury of the 2-bed hotel room. He’s still dazed and gripping the handle of his suitcase when a pillow comes flying towards his head and his breath is knocked completely out of him.

Hyukjae lets out an indignant cry and races towards a laughing Sungmin, grabbing a pillow and announcing murder at the top of his lungs. Ryeowook giggles from the side and joins in the pillow fight, the three running around, luggage forgotten and yells echoing in the room. Hyukjae thinks he’s knocked down a few things in the midst of the chase but the adrenaline is pumping in his ears until he’s panting and chuckling on the bed with Sungmin and Ryeowook beside him.

A pillow flops on his chest and he sees their teacher leaning on the wall, his eyebrows raised and bearing an indifferent but amused look. “Have you guys finished playing?”

“No,” Ryeowook laughs, “Mr. Lee, you wanna join?”

The teacher rolls his eyes. “No thanks,” he says and drags his suitcase with him, “We’re heading out for lunch with everybody else in 10 minutes. I’m going to change.” Hyukjae watches disappointedly as the man enters the bathroom and locks the door.

“Aw, it would’ve been fun if Mr. Lee joined us,” Sungmin pouts, apparently thinking the same and hopping off the bed.

Half an hour later, the students and teachers have gathered at a small restaurant, the buzz of chatter almost overwhelming the lively music playing through the speakers. The students having their own table and the teachers’ a separate, Hyukjae jokes with Ryeowook, watches Sungmin stuff his face with food, helps Kyuhyun with his game on PSP (receiving an angry punch in return), and chats with Kibum, who he thinks is oddly mysterious but charming as a whole.

He’s finding it hard for his eyes not to drift to a man at another table who sits eating quietly and chuckling occasionally at some joke. Hyukjae sighs, staring awkwardly down at his plate of almost untouched food, stabbing his fork down into his spaghetti. He hears a roar of laughter from that table and his eyes land on that thin lipped smile again.

There’s a cough across from where he’s sitting and he sees his best friend grinning sneakily at him, eyes glinting suggestively at Hyukjae. His cheeks are burning up again and he thinks to himself how stupid he is to get caught. What is Sungmin going to think of him? Hyukjae doesn’t have much of an appetite anymore.

In a blur of self-reproach and anxiety, he finds himself in the restrooms of the restaurant, having been pulled out of his seat by Sungmin, who is staring expectantly at him with a smug look on his face. Hyukjae wants to slap it off him.

“So, you going to tell me who it is?”

Hyukjae keeps himself busy with the handsoap at the sink.

“Hey.”

Scrub. Scrub. Scrub.

“Would you STOP doing that,” Sungmin turns off the water and sighs exasperatedly.

“Can’t you see I’m washing my hands?”

“No, I can’t, and you haven’t answered my question yet.”

Hyukjae blinks at him. “What question?”

His friend flails his arms. “You-God, I’m fed up with you. I saw you staring, it’s Kibum isn’t it?”

Hyukjae burns himself on the hot metal of the hand dryer. “Ow! Shit.”

“So it is him?”

“Jeez, you’re so annoying.” Hyukjae growls as he tries to soothe the pain with cold water.

“Aw, our little Hyukkie is in love,” Sungmin sings, twirling around and cooing at him.

“Shut up, you. And it’s not hi-”

“What? Hyukjae has a crush on someone?”

Sungmin trips during mid-spin and Hyukjae drops the paper towel he’s holding, and Hyukjae plans to really murder Sungmin this time when he sees Mr. Lee’s grinning face in the mirror.
