part 1

Kyuhyun glanced at the tracking device beeping in his palm.

“It’s working, it’s working,” he muttered gleefully, but looked up to realize that there was barely anyone around. He had somehow walked into a deserted alley. “What’s he doing in a place like this?”

The red dot on the monitor was flashing to his left and Kyuhyun followed its lead until he spotted a figure on a trash bin with its back turned. He grinned and crept as discretely as he could until he was close enough to murmur into the person’s ear.

“Gotcha.”

In a blur of wind the person turned around, sending a hard shove that slammed Kyuhyun against a wall. An elbow dug painfully into his chest and a hand was poised at his throat, prepared to strike; Kyuhyun could feel the heat radiating off the curled fingers, they were barely touching his skin. He found himself terrified at the precision.

His eyes finally focused on the man before him, and his blood froze at the sight. Sungmin’s eyes looked like a madman’s; his gaze was lunatic, full of murderous intent, and while breathing hard through his nose, veins stood out from the skin of his neck.

“Oh, shit,” Sungmin hissed and he drew back as quickly as he came, running a hand through his hair. Kyuhyun caught a glimpse of him hastily slipping his leather gloves back on.

“How’d you find me?” the other growled, pacing around, eyes darting frantically back and forth between Kyuhyun and the rest of the alleyway.

“I-uh-um,” Kyuhyun was still blank with shock, “this.” He raised the tracking device stupidly.

“That’s not a very nice way to arrange a second meeting. Am I an experimentee of another of your inventions?” Sungmin left a tinge of sarcasm in his voice.

“The first for this one, actually. And you proved pretty good results.” Kyuhyun replied matter-of-factly, and Sungmin’s face twitched slightly.

As the other continued to anxiously eye their surroundings, Kyuhyun decided to bring out something that was on his mind.

“The gloves..... what are they actually for?”

Sungmin shot him a hard look, staring at him unblinkingly for a stifling period of silence. Finally, he spoke.

“To restrain a curse.”

“A curse?”

“An abnormality, mistake of nature.”

“I don’t-“

“Would you believe me then if I said I could suck the life out of you by touching you?”

Kyuhyun’s brain clicked. “Oh.”

“But,” Sungmin’s gaze turned colder, “you wouldn’t understand, would you?”

“What?”

“You, in your little cozy house, think you’re so special with the, well, let’s see, powers you have,” Sungmin rambled, “flying things everywhere and taking advantage with things in life normal people have to actually do. And then now you’re stalking me with your new invention and-fuck, I almost killed you! What are you even doing here?!” He panted, balling his fists and staring wide-eyed at Kyuhyun.

“Okay, alright, I admit, I shouldn’t have followed you,” Kyuhyun laughed raised his hands defensively, “why are you taking everything so seriously? Relax.”

“That’s for you to say. But what about me? Huh? Me?” Sungmin pounded his chest. “I am anyone’s worst nightmare, Kyuhyun. Who are you to tell me to relax? Who are you to say that when I go around trying not to murder everyone and you’re taking everything as a joke?”

“Stop, you don’t know what I’ve gone through.” The smile had on Kyuhyun’s face had long disappeared.

Sungmin let out a derisive jeer and Kyuhyun struck the brick wall, landing a fist beside his ear. He leaned down towards Sungmin, blue eyes glinting dangerously.

“Shut up. Just shut up. Do you think I like having this? It killed my parents when I was four. People believed I was cursed and secluded me. I hated myself and fell into depression, those years were sheer torture. But I learned how to overcome and control my abilities and told myself I would live anew and never fall into the same abyss of self-loathing again. You? If you were smart enough, try finding a way out and control what you have instead of spouting how pitiful you are to the world.”

Kyuhyun’s stinging voice echoed off the alley walls. He pulled back and straightened as Sungmin let the words sink in. They stared wordlessly at each other before Kyuhyun muttered, “I should go,” and turned to leave. Sungmin panicked and grabbed his arm.

“Wait, don’t leave.”

When the other raised his eyebrows, Sungmin sighed. “I need to tell you something.”

---

“Right now you have to promise me to trust me in whatever I say,” Sungmin said seriously, the two of them sitting along the dirtied walls of an abandoned building. Sungmin had led a confused Kyuhyun by the arm into somewhere he thought couldn’t be more isolated.

“If letting someone pull me into somewhere without a living soul in sight isn’t trust then I don’t know what it is anymore.” Sungmin’s lips curled slightly. At least Kyuhyun was back.

“So now, basically, you cannot go back to your house, you cannot contact any of your relatives, you cannot talk to anyone or reveal your identity, and you must stay with me at all times. You fail to follow or you violate these rules, I cannot guarantee your.... safety.”

Sungmin paused and looked at Kyuhyun, who was staring intently back at him. “Go on, I’m listening.”

“Two days ago, after we first met, I received a call from my chief, and he assigned me to a new job from one of his clients. The job had to be completed before today at dusk. Which I refused.”

Kyuhyun looked completely puzzled at the moment. “Why?”

“Because my new assignment was you.”

“Wha-“

“Think, Kyuhyun, think.” Sungmin held his gloved hands in front of him.

A few seconds passed with Kyuhyun staring at his hands. Then his eyes widened.

“No way. Don’t tell me-oh, god, no...” Sungmin sighed internally, he had expected the reaction.

“...I’m such a fragile little soul, why would someone want to hurt me?” Kyuhyun covered his mouth dramatically.

Sungmin rolled his eyes. Kyuhyun was different, he supposed. “Brat.” He punched the other’s shoulder. “It’s not the time.”

“Alright.” Kyuhyun’s eyes softened. “Why did you refuse?”

Sungmin lowered his gaze. “Because.....I can’t. I know I can’t.”

Kyuhyun smirked. “You’re not a very professional assassin are you? Letting personal feelings interfere.”

Sungmin winced. “Don’t call me that. Please.”

“Sorry.” Kyuhyun gently gripped his shoulder. He sighed. “What’s going to happen from now on?”

“If I am correct, someone will be sent onto both of us.”

“Is that why you were so bitchy and uptight back in the alley?” Sungmin groaned.

“I’m sorry about earlier. I didn’t mean it, I was too strung up then.”

“Yes you did. But let’s just forget it all, shall we?”

“Yeah,” Sungmin smiled gratefully at the other. “Yeah we should.”
