Ouch. This is such a complex story and I feel so much for Jack in it. And for Ellie, and for Ennis, and even for Blevins... everyone. Seeing it update makes my day even when the content is hard, and you even made me feel cold and wet with your descriptions. We are really blessed to have writers such as you writing for us ♥

Thank you so much for the lovely comments. I really don't think I do settings well, so I'm glad to hear that someone is able to get the idea of what my feeble words are trying to convey.
This was a hard chapter to write, but I'm hoping the next one will be a bit better. Won't start out that way, but by the ending maybe some things will be headed in the right direction, even if nothing is really fixed all the way.

This entire story has become a stunning exercise in realism, examining what life would be like for our heroes under these circumstances, and I can't wait to see where you take it next. You have taken Annie's characters and allowed them to continue to grow and develop as life throws its barbs at them, and I love where you've taken them, turning them both into individuals in their own rights.

Excellent job. Can't wait for more.

Thank you, Dear. Your words mean so much to me.
The road has not been smooth, but they are trudging along as best they can. Hopefully things will start smoothing out in the next couple of chapters. :-)

This chapter completely broke my heart. Thank you for "going there". You have me rooting for these guys so hard that any setback is so devastating. I am running out of ways to applaud the work you are doing on this story. Well done, well done, well done. My heart is breaking though, so please, please update soon.

Sorry about your heart, but thanks so much for the supportive words.
I just hope I can get them "there" and back in one piece. :-)
The next part is going to start out pretty badly, but I hope by the end of it there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. Jack unlocked the door in this chapter, and he's going to open it in the next. All he'll need is for someone who cares to walk in and set him straight! :-)

Please forgive me for being a nag, but I hope you update this story soon. I am dying here. Have a great holiday weekend.

There is a lot going on in Jack's head and his self-esteem is not what it should be to sustain him. He misses Ennis and his father's voice?....Now he is angry and hurt that Ennis isn't there to make it go away. I really want to see how are you going to handle this...what you have in your mind about your J&E.

Thanks and looking forward to more

Ennis had a lot of support when he was making his way, but Jack hasn't had too much, and what he has had hasn't been strong enough to overcome the voice that beat him down for his whole life. What Jack doesn't know is that Ennis' voice was just as negative in the beginning. As Ennis came to accept himself, the voices changed. After all, the voices are really their own thoughts about themselves. Jack has a lot of people on his side, he's just got to quit concentrating only on his 'failures', and look around and see that he has plenty of successes, too.

Well, this chapter surely is something! I have really enjoyedreading about Jack history at the base. I could gladly slap that mayor... But everybody knows how are people like him. I fear everybody knows some of them. In this way, though, Ellie and Ennis could really talk, which was unlikely to happen if Jack was there [why talking when you can fuck, after all?] And I have to say: I like Ellie. She is very true. Like a person. I know people like her father exists and her history rings even too possible for me. And I like the way she talks about it with Ennis. Matter of fact. Like a true person would talk about such time if he had to. Ennis reactions too are wonderful! We can really say how much he is improved in his "fear-handling" business. And in a certain way, I believe he could respect her more now. Don't know why, but I have got this idea ( ... )

Unfortunately, image is everything, especially in politics. Jack stepped on a few wrong toes, but there are more people who applaud his actions instead of condemning them. It's usually those who are discontented that make the loudest noises, and those are the ones he's hear.
I'm glad you like Ellie. I wasn't sure how she would be taken, especially with the 'threat' part, but she really wasn't doing anything more than giving Ennis the means to do what he wants to do anyway - be with Jack.
And yes, he will respect her more than he has, though I don't think it will ever reach the level of respect he had for Thelma and Elmer.
And there is going to be a good drunk in the next chapter, but probably not exactly what you have in mind. *grin*
I am really going to try to update next Saturday. I'm heading out first thing Sunday morning to meet a group of friends in Phoenix. If not, it's a three hour flight so hopefully I can get it finished up for posting on Sunday night or Monday evening.
