Ellie is a remarkable woman. She reads people so well, about Jacks mother hurting Jack to save him, hits close to home. And even to this day where there are places to go for abused women, how many are still afraid or ashamed to find that help.Jack still is haunted by his fathers hatred for him and he may always yearn for his love, but with Ennis, Ellie and so many true friends to love him he will realize he is a man worthy of love. And I hope in time he will go see his mother and tell her he loves her. Ennis has changed a lot just hope no remarks come up at the gathering to undo all the good.
Your writing as always touches me deeply.
Thank you
Torry

Ellie knows a lot about the harder side of life, but as Ennis pointed out, she doesn't know what it's like to wonder if someone is going to want to kill her for what she is. I'm sure a few wives/girlfriends have thought about killing her, and many other whores, throughout the years, but that isn't the same as the fears that Ennis has faced in his short life. She doesn't have all the answers, and some of them might even be wrong, but she truly wants to help, and for Jack, that's worth more than her being right all the time.
One day Jack will make some measure of peace with his mother.
As for Ennis, if he truly has changed, then a few remarks may unsettle him, but they won't do irreparable damage.
Thanks for your touching comments. They are always greatly appreciated. :-)

Ennis does seem to be coming out of his shell a little more now with Ellie showing her support for him. And Jack is surprised, but very happy to see it, especially since Ennis will be going with him to Jennings' cookout on the Fourth of July.

I'm looking forward to your next chapter. : )

You are so right. Jack is happy, but surprised, when Ennis does things that Jack figured he would never do. Ennis did a lot of growing without Jack there to see it, but despite his confusion and worries, Jack is very happy for Ennis.
One cookout, complete with fireworks, coming up. :-)

I think it's a good thing that Jack no longer hears his father in his head - hopefully soon he'll hear Ennis. Though it made me sad to think Jack might prefer that old bastard to silence. Jack need to learn to live w/ himself - then he'll be ready to believe he's worth something.

I wasn't really happy with this part because it didn't seem to *do* anything, but one thing I did want it to show is exactly what you pointed out - that Jack was still hearing nothing, and that was bothering him almost as much as hearing the nasty barbs from his father.
I don't think Jack ever did well alone, and like a child that gets in trouble just to get a reaction, he would prefer negative attention to none at all. You are so right that Jack has to learn to be comfortable with himself before he'll be able to accept what others are telling him. :-)

Ennis and Ellie talkin bout him while he's sitten there! And he's gonna call em on it. Cute!

Although Jack was a little miffed at being talked about like he wasn't in the room, but mostly he was proud to hear that Ennis appreciated him for more than just sex. "Hey, I'm sittin' right here, ya know."

"Must a fergot, bein' ya weren't yappin' like ya usually do."

I love how excited Jack is. Like he got his betest present ever on Christma morning:

"You'd really come with me?" Jack asked, still not daring to hope.

Glad you found some positive moments in this chapter. There isn't much going on, but it is setting the stage for things to come. :-)

Jack does, too, it's just a bit much for him to comprehend after knowing only a closed-off paranoid Ennis.
