Veronica found her next to the bed, plastic shower curtain chafing against her sides, and Mac folded into Veronica’s arms on instinct. She pressed herself against the other girl’s body and explained in a voice thick with sobs how the night had gone horribly wrong.

Later, in sweatpants and a t-shirt from Logan’s suite-she thinks they might have been Duncan’s-Veronica told her just how horribly wrong the night had gone, and Mac remembered Peter Ferrere in her Algebra class and Keith Mars’s kind eyes and the way Cassidy had touched her and while she thinks she might have screamed, she knows she vomited, Veronica’s hand between her shoulder-blades.

A week and a half later Veronica found her sitting on her bedroom floor, staring at a screen full of Cassidy’s emails and clenching white-knuckled fists. Veronica eased down behind her, reached out to close the lid on her PowerBook, and pulled Mac into a clumsy embrace that was mostly elbows.

Mac leaned back, closed dry eyes, and tried not to shake; Veronica’s fingers were cool against the back of her hand and her voice was low, murmuring nonsense into Mac’s hair. Veronica smelled like she’d been baking for Wallace-cinnamon and nutmeg-and Mac breathed it in and felt a little safer.

Another week later, or the week after that, Mac’s family went camping without her-thank god-and she asked Veronica to stay over, saying “girls’ weekend” but meaning “I don’t want to be alone.” Veronica found Mac in the den hooking up the TV, and when she brandished a handful of dorky DVDs and two bottles of wine, Mac could have kissed her.

Halfway through Antitrust, she did.

It was desperate and clumsy and their teeth clashed, but Veronica kissed her back-a surprise-and cupped her face and pushed her down, and not long after Mac’s hand was folded around Veronica’s breast and she was whispering “Thank you” into her mouth, and Veronica was whispering “I’m sorry” back and Mac wanted to tell her that it didn’t matter, she’d be okay, that everything would be okay because Veronica would always find her.
