'I'm not like THOSE sorts of people.'

I seriously cannot stand the us-and-them mindset that some members of minority groups have. While there's room for delineating different members of a certain group, it's really unproductive to make those differences a cause for animosity BETWEEN those people. I've seen it among quite a few groups, actually: plural groups have gone 'we're not like ( Read more... )

I've seen it in trans circles as well--"you aren't a Twu Twanny unless you get bottom surgery," or, "there's no such thing as a non-op trans person; they're just not serious about it." And so forth.

I really think that people need to feel better about themselves. Hell, I admit that even I do it to some extent. I'm trying to overcome the elitism that makes me think that being into superhero comics is better than being into manga. It's stupid--lots of superhero comics are crap, and lots of manga is good. But there you go.

ffffff. I think a lot of that is insecurity, as well. They just can't deal with the idea that someone may go about things differently than someone else. I know that I've struggled with it a bit. Not necessarily with transgender people, but with a few other minority groups, and I'm embarrassed to say that I have thought that way at times. I've worked on it a lot since I've matured, though.

One of my good friends is asexual, and we've seen both sides of this argument - some asexuals don't want to identify as queer because that would associate them with weirdos, and some LGBTQueer people don't want to let asexuals identify as such because it "Reinforces negative stereotypes" (?!?).

...um, what? How does it reinforce negative stereotypes? That just doesn't compute. :/

I wouldn't have thought so, either (isn't the stereotype that queerfolk are promiscuous?), but apparently this school of thought holds that asexuals are mentally unsound, and this is the stereotype they're worried about. *eyeroll*
