I was at the eye doctor's yesterday and a question on the form was "what are your hobbies". I hate this question, my first answer in my head is always "doing stuff". The first thing I usually put down is "Adventuring" because what else would you call picking a place on a map and just driving there. Also, I'm pretty much down for any kind of ( Read more... )

I hate the question, too. I know what I like but sometimes it seems even downright invasive to ask for those things to be revealed to a stranger. I prefer the idea of people finding out what you're into just by observing over time. That's how I discover it for myself as well.

Once I was talking to this man who was describing his son, a marathon runner who pulled in numerous awards throughout high school. He listed all his son's various races and awards and I was touched by how proud he was. Then he asked me "Do you run?"

I said no, not competitively. He continued "Well, do you play soccer? Do you ski?..", until I broke in and said "Well, I don't really play any sports." Then he said "What do you do, then? Cheerleading?"

I was amused at his athletic-centric world, but I was embarrassed by the question because I was sure how to answer what it was I did.
