agreed w.r.t. Inception / it could've been so.much more.

The story about Decap and his wife was not at all engaging. Why did he love this woman? Why can't he let her go? She just a crazy and possessive memory at this point.

.. jeez, was this so incredibly different from the dynamic in Shutter Island? "it's my dead wife's fault!"

anyway, while S. Island made me nostalgic for Angel Heart, Inception left me longing for something yet t'be made, say a Luc Besson treatment of P.K. Dick's Maze of Death.

the New Yorker and (excessively snarky) Salon reviews said it better than I did. Drake calls James Cameron the world's greatest 2nd-unit director. Same could be said of Nolan.

Maze of Death --> to read. Other possible directors: Cohen bros, Stephen Chow, Mike Leigh, Claire Denis.

Yes, I think the most frustrating thing is that Inception (in theory) is so close to being the kind of thing I like best. In execution, however...

I liked Inception alright (esp JGL though) myglock_yrface July 26 2010, 02:17:00 UTC
I read a theory today which seems pretty water-tight, about how Cobb always has his wedding ring on in dreams & off in realities, & it's backed w/ screencapped evidence:

if you haven't had enough commentary yet:

I like his approach / characterization of it not about dreams but "about the mind-body problem in the age of gaming." Which *action fans* find this movie most appealing? Gamers.

I saw Inception as a wasted opportunity as well. When literally anything is possible in your setting, why settle for rote guys-with-guns action scenes?
