I'd say this sounds like sort of a lost cause from the get-go the way you're describing it.

The only thing I can think of is to find some common interest that they have, possibly talk them into going on a blind date (or maybe a double-date with you and rachel) and give them both some commonground interests that they can talk about, but beyond that... good luck.
