in regards to poor people-- it's a matter of making it clear that the democratic party, for the most part, is on their side and the republicans, for the most part, are not. the democratic party is seen as a northeast liberal elitist institution, and there's so much about it (and so much that it does) that isn't at all. it's all about image, people.

The larger turn-out was largely comprised of people who came to vote on the gay-marraige bans around the country, all of whom also voted for Bush because he had come out against gay marraige a while ago.
I wouldn't be suprised if Ohio, which had the "no extra gay rights" amendment was decided by these same people.

I can't believe it passed in oregon, though. I always forget (and kick myself for forgetting) that oregon is larger than portland, california is larger than santa monica, pennsylvania is larger than swarthmore, new york state is larger than new york city. etc.
