That's the most pressing concept, in my mind. Imagine a universe which is made up of several billion different futures (one for each possible event at any given moment {A moment defined as 1*10&-43 seconds}), and every one of those futures becomes it's own alternate reality. If that is the case, than there's are an indefinite copy of each of us, all with the same originating points (and to some degree, the same past).
To take this back to my example above (the wall changing colour), I've heard many things about people 'disappearing' from our world. As if to be taken out of existence altogether. For example, on an old Fox show called Fact or Fiction there was one case where a woman disappeared from her hotel room in Paris. She was never seen again, the hotel attendants claim that they (she and her daughter) never even booked a room. It's almost as if the mother had never come to France in the first place. ( ... )
